was referred to software forum, so hope someone out there will be able to help me. am using Outlook Express and have been unable to send outgoing email for past two to three weeks. contacted server, we went over settings and they say that problem is with Norton anti-virus, not atlanticbb - using instructions from Norton I disabled scanning for outgoing mail and nothing has changed. details of error listed a number and also a port 25, which atlanticbb swears is Norton. any suggestions?

Well, you could download another anti-virus, disable Norton, enable the new anti-virus, and then try sending an email and see what happens. If it sends, then you've found the culprit.

Are you on a network, or just at your home computer? The port 25 is the port your outgoing mail uses to leave your machine, if you know what I mean. Are you using a firewall, or just an anti-virus?

    BTW, Welcome to Major Geeks!

That's a great idea -- and he mentions to just DISABLE Norton - not delete or remove it. This way you can test what's going on.

If/when you decide to remove Norton (if it's Norton AV 2002), go to this site for removal instructions -- you can remove it from add/remove programs, but then there's some other hunting around in the computer you may want to do to really remove it:

Yikes - you need a firewall -- do you at least have the windows firewall enabled?

I use AVAST -- I'll find a couple threads here that you can read about anti-viruses (just give me a minute)

    This one's specifically about Norton:

This is about Avast and AVG

This is about and av I've never really heard of

If you want to know more about why some people dislike Norton, just type in NAV or Norton into the Search at the top of the page and you'll be busy reading. ;)

Yep, no one seems to like Norton, and since AVG is free, and I can afford free, I use that.

One thing though. YOu'll need an activation key from AVG if you choose to use that....they email you one as soon as you register. Can you receive emails? If so, give AVG a try. And those threads that pegg posted will be helpful too.

Another firewall to try is Zone Alarm. I think it's free too, but I'm not sure. Available here at MG.

Yep - Zone Alarm is free. So is Sygate. You can get them on the main page....but then you have to configure Outlook Express to work with them (but if I can do it -- you can to).

i disabled norton and tried another av - as I said, no luck
whoever said getting rid of norton was a pia was dead on balls accurate(to quote a line from the movie My Cousin Vinny) the directions said it would take at least 30 mins. and I cannot even find the exact web site they want me to use - there must be a zillion to choose from - it's almost 3am and I think I best call it quits and dig in again later today - will keep you all posted if I have any success - thanks again to all of you. I'm learning. :)

so do you have another anitivirus up and running?

    A firewall?

Are you still having e-mail trouble (usually there are some "re-configurations" that have to be done at this point in e-mail settings, options, etc.)

    cynthia,
I have personally had this problem with NAV 2003 once, and I can sympathize with you. But, the help section/button provided information on the way to fix the problem that I had at the time. I never had any problems with NAV 2001, or 2002, and I currently have an unopened package of NAV 2004 setting on my book case. This forum has given me many reasons not to use it, not the least of which, is getting rid of it.
Everyone has their own favorite, but I agree with pegg on Avast. I use it on two of my three machines, and when my current subscribtion for 2003 runs out, I will use it on the machine that I'm typing on now, an old e-machine 500 mhz. celeron. :)
