On today's MG front page (May 26 2009) we have an updated release of Emco Malware Destroyer (link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Emco_Malware_Destroyer_d5289.html). I first used this a year or two ago when it was first released and it was SO FREEKIN' FAST that I assumed it wasn't really doing any deep scanning. I used it again about a month ago and, again, it was SO FREEKIN' FAST that I didn't really think it could possibly be working. Yes, I only tried it twice in 2 years. And, yes, neither PC had a particularly bad malware infection. And, yes, the file size is quite large for a malware scanner with no real-time protection (over 37mb). So, I'm looking for some first hand info about this app... has anyone used it on a heavily infected PC? or a marginally infected PC? how effective was it? The 2nd time I used it (which was a month ago) the PC was known to be infected and Emco did detect and remove some stuff; I don't remember the details, it was a month ago, I work on LOTS of infected PCs and for one to stand out it would have to be REALLY infected, and (as some of you regular long-time MG members might know), due to too much fun in my '20s running around following the Grateful Dead, my memory is like a big block of old swiss cheese: it stinks and is full of holes. So.... Emco Malware Destroyer.... comments? thoughts? experiences? and how did they make it SO FREEKIN' FAST?!?!?!?

from reading the description, it seems to be like spybot. It only searches for exact locations of files, and not the entire computer. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that windows indexes files for faster scanning. I also noticed that it searches for ~11500 signatures, whereas spybot searches for over 500,000 files. as for the signature thing, i think thats where the fast scan comes from (10 seconds) .

Hmmmm.... makes sense.... it probably uses heuristics fairly heavily also..... thanks for the input. Has anyone used Emco on a HEAVILY infected PC? Maybe I'll give it a go the next time one of these malware nightmares comes through.
    ;)
