    I religiously use Empty Temp to clear the junk, but it always tells me that there are (plus or minus) 9,983 kbs that it is unable to delete. Can anyone tell me what this almost 10mbs of data is, and why Empty Temp can not delete it? TIA.

    Hi

    Likely they are locked files system files, one which will likely be locked is the index.dat files, these are generally deleted on reboot, with some Cleaners ( I know CCleaner does this ).

    What Windows version you using, only reason I asking this is that Empty Temp is not now updated and has not been since 2002, so with the newer OSes, its likely that this application cannot delete these files properly as its not setup to do so.

    To know what this 10mb of data is you would have to supply us a file/s names.

    I am editing this post to update the new lack of problem solved by downloading and running CCleaner. After running it I still showed the 10mbs of data not deletable, but after a reboot it was gone. I suppose my Empty Temp Folders was the problem. So, I shall now uninstall the Empty Temp Folders and continue with CCleaner. Thank you Halo for mentioning it in your reply to my original post. I left what I had posted previously, in hope that it could aid others. If this is not kosher, then a Forum Administrator may totally eliminate this forum entry in it's entirety with my hearty thanks at solving my tiny little dilema.

    PREVIOUS TO REPAIR:

    O/S in question is XP, three versions on three different computers. SP1, SP2 and Media Center. Works the same on all three. Index.dat is one of the files, ROMFN shows up, desktop.ini several times, Perflib_Perfdataf00.dat is there, search.htm is another as well as ordersummary.htm, cart.htm, newreply.htm and iemnu.htc are there as well. The index.dat is in about thirty seperate places and are all very small like .07 kb or .14 kb except for in two places where they are 48 and 752 kb respectively. The reason I use Empty Temp even though it has not been updated is because it works. It gets rid of cookies and temporary internet files and is so simple in design that it almost cannot screw up. And it's free. That doesn't count for much, but it gives cuddo points. What do you use for example for Media Center or Vista, of which I have one computer running each? Thnx.

    Hi drighten,

    Cheers for the feedback, always good to have some feeback to how a problem was solved, I hear you loud and clear on if an application works then you have no reason to change it, and free is always good. Personally I like to troubleshoot an issue, but there are times when this is not possible and alternates are more applicable.

    Me I tend to use CCLeaner ( free also ) for all OSes it has regular updates, so is still a very current supported app, and works ok in Vista ( all of my PCs x3 are now on Vista )

    and as for eliminating the thread, well as I am an admin of this site, you are correct the info serves its purpose for others, so it stays.

    Hope to see you around these parts often.

    In addition to CCleaner (which I use often) I also like ATF-Cleaner, Zappit, and System Cleanup. All are free and available here at MajorGeeks. Here's the links:
    CCleaner http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Toolbar_d4191.html
    ATF-Cleaner http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html (check one, check 'em all! Some people leave the Prefetch as they say emptying it slows down the PC, I've never noticed any slowness after emptying the Prefetch but your results may vary)
    System Cleanup http://majorgeeks.com/System_Cleanup_d4533.html
    Zappit! http://majorgeeks.com/Zappit_System_Cleaner_d5207.html (has Safe and Advanced cleaning modes; sets restore points before cleaning)

    MY $0.02 on CCleaner, Empty Temp Folders , et al. I use around 8 cleanup programs daily, in the same sequence, each day. CCleaner is #2, Empty Temp Folders is #3. EmptyTemp nearly always finds stuff that the first two miss.

    I know EmptyTemp hasn't been updated for ages but it still works for me on XP Pro. It may not be able to delete everything it finds. Maybe CCleaner worked because its' defaults are set different to Empty Temp Folders.

    I will be continuing to use both (actually all 8) as each progressively finds stuff the previous one/s miss. That's why I use them. :D

    Hey BB... how about a list of these 8 programs? I'm just curious. On my home PC I use ATF, CCleaner, and System Cleanup. Once every 4 or 6 weeks I run CleanUp! (the free one by Steven Gould). I use ATF daily (emptying the Prefetch only once every 2-3 weeks). CCleaner I use maybe 3-5 times weekly, and System Cleanup I use maybe once a week followed by a defrag. On defrag day, I'll run the gamut of cleaners (including CCleaner's reg cleaner) before running Auslogics defrag. Every 3rd or 4th defrag, I'll also run the Windows Defrag after Auslogics and after all the cleaners....

    My list of religiously used maintenance software was 1) Empty Temp used daily or after every time I use my banking software because I am paranoid about cookies, etc. 2) Registry Mechanic every time I install or uninstall a software application, 3) AdAware - till I got Spydoctor - now it takes care of itself, and 4) on Defrag day, I use all these plus CWshredder, Hijackthis, RegistryCure, Spybot and now I just got Defraggler, which redoes what Windows defrag doesn't totally do, but I have found that after Defraggler, Windows defrag also does more.

    Now due to this thread, I have four more with CCleaner, ATF Cleaner, System Cleanup and Zappit. The info on Empty Temp finding what CCleaner didn't is very good, so I will put Empty Temp back on this box, which is my testing box, XP Media Center powered. I also use Acronis True Image every time I get a stable setup that I like (and burn it to a disc labelled with what backup it is and what I liked about it in a Word file)

    14. 1-3 times per week I run
    ERDNT and delete older Registry backups created daily, on bootup,
    by ERUNT. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1267.html Erunt extracts ERDNT as part of the installation.

    or c:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe as a Shortcut.
    20. I run a defrag program once a week.
    Start-->Run-->dfrg.msc <enter>
    or %SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc as a Shortcut.
    Usually I use Norton Speeddisk (this has been a favourite of mine for many years)
    Occasionally I run WinContig that allows specified Files or Folders only, to be defragged. http://majorgeeks.com/WinContig_d5614.html
    It uses the standard MS XP defragger as its' base.
    =======================

    20. Every 2 weeks or so, I check Battery charge as I like to run my laptop on AC power as much as possible.

    ========================

    21. Every 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th and last day of the month I backup essential files.

    ========================
    22. Every month, or so, I check out my Program Files, Keepers and Testing Folders to see if I can delete
    un-used, or rarely used programs.

    It actually doesn't take that long to run the daily programs. I quite often have 3-4 running at the same time and 100% CPU usage on both of my dual cores (CPU's) laptop. Bazza

    Excellent, excellent, excellent - most. This is the first time I have found anyone who is as or more paranoid than I am. I copied your list and will try it out in the near future. You posted it for dlb, but I am most appreciative.

    You're welcome. Anyone is welcome to try these out. The main reason I run all these is that "everyone" thinks the sun shines out of CCleaner's porthole. It doesn't catch everything, none of the programs do or I'd only run one. :D

    Run CCleaner and then Advanced Windows Care to see what I mean, as an example. Bazza

    Holy :crap !!! You weren't kidding BB!!!! I've used and still use many of the programs you listed. But I've been looking for something like WUTool for freekin' ages. I did find a script that will install updates from whatever folder I specify, so I used WUDownloader (link http://www.majorgeeks.com/Windows_Updates_Downloader_d5440.html) to download the individual updates, burned 'em to CD with the script I found, and now I can install all the updates offline, without an internet connection straight from CD. It looks like this WU Tool is kind of the same thing. I'll have to check it out. Thanks Bazza, you crazy paranoid sunnuvagun! ;)
