Please help Me....I've purchase an older Compaq Presario 1610 with Windows 2000 previously installed. The previous owner has disabled the Modem in the Control Panel, Phone and Modem Icon. The problem is, there's no way in that same Icon to ENABLE it. When toubleshooting this problem, I get an error 29, stating that Windows 2000 can not overwrite a disabled modem, that it has to be done in the BIOS. So I proceed to the BIOS and found that there is nothing mentioned of MODEM no where in this area. I've tried enabling it in Device Manager under PROPERTIES of the modem, there's no option in that to enable it (unlike XP, which you can enable or disable in Device Manager.

Somebody please tell me how can I enable this modem  . All the drivers are in there and are fine.

    Hi, welcome to MG.

Have you tried uninstalling the hardware for it and then reinstalling it?????

:) You might want to try going into the system properties, device manager and see if it is listed there, if so click on it and at the bottom of the window, click on remove this item. After doing that, restart your computer and windows should find and reinstall it. If not listed in device manager, you can go to install new hardware (in the control pannel) and use that program to reinstall it. Hope this helps you. Good luck. Ben.......

Yes, I have tried uninstalling it and re-installing it, no luck, it still comes back as disabled.

I've tried removing it in the device manager and allowing Win 2000 to detect it on restarting the system. It detects it and put it back on the Device Manager's list but it is still disabled. I've also tried going into installing New Software and the system would only update the drivers for the Modem but the status is STILL disabled. In the Phone/Modem Option of Control Panel the Modem is dispkayed as "Not Functional", when troubleshoot is perform, it's displayed as disabled by the user or bios.

Did you try to look at the properties of this modem in the device manager? Or will it not let you do that? I think you might have a defective modem. I would physically take it out of the computer after removing it from the device manager, and before restarting the computer. After restarting check to see if anything is listed in the device manager for modem. Next shut down the computer and reinstall the modem physically. making sure if there any jumpers on the modem that they are set right.
A restart at this point should reinstall the modem. Hope this helps. Ben ...

PS If you have another modem available, you might want to try it, at this point.

You should be able to go into Device Manager and see the modem with a red x. Try right clicking on it and a window should pop up, and enable should be one of the options in it. :)
