I used the full menu under Tools, Clicked Options, and the Security.
Then I created a passord and told the program to save changes made to the document. This did nothing to encrypt the folder in My Documents, and the folder would still open with no password.
Please would someone give me all the steps to encrypt a file folder in
Word 2002? I'd appreciate the help! Janette

If you mean that you want to set up your folder and file security so that when the folder is clicked on another user is LOCKED out and not able to open the folder at all; without entering a password – My suggestion would be to use a third party application like Folder Lock or WinGuard Pro 2006 [which comes with an add-on for locking folders and files]. Folder Lock is shareware and WinGuard Pro comes in a freeware as well as shareware version; which has far more features.

Using Microsoft Office 2000/XP (MS Word, Excell, and PowerPoint) "Encrypting File System" for the purpose of preventing access to "opening" the folder and consequentially seeing what's inside - is not possible, unfortunately.

That's because when using the MS Encrypting File System - the folder becomes an "encrypted folder" – Meaning new files that you create in this folder are automatically encrypted. However; that this does not prevent others from opening and viewing the contents [files] inside the folder. This prevents ONLY others from opening items in the encrypted folder.

Although MS Office does offer this "simple" EFS as a way to protect a document by using a password entry using the Encrypting File System - this provides only very basic [read: lousy] security for MS Word, Excell documents (.DOC, XLS, PPT) from unauthorized access. I would not recommend using build-in MS Office security features. Search around Google for a while and you can find as many MS Office password crackers that could easily bypass EFS.

Any intruder who gains unauthorized physical access to your encrypted files or folders will be ONLY be prevented from reading them. If the intruder tries to open or copy your encrypted file or folder he receives an access denied message. Permissions on files and folders do not protect against unauthorized physical attacks. Using EFS is similar to using permissions on files and folders both methods can be used to restrict access to data.

Additionally, encrypting a folder or file using the MS EFS does not protect against deletion or listing files or directories. Anyone with the appropriate permissions can delete or list encrypted folders or files.
