I enjoy a sim racing game. My problem, other programs running in the background. I've heard of EndItAll to solve this.
Can anyone help me find it or have any other suggestions.

OMG my eyes my eyes........... now I can focus again a few questions for you,

    What OS are you using?
Do you have many items in the system tray?
Some system specs may help here eg. GFX card, Amount of ram etc
    Are your Drivers upto date?

and yes closing down programs that are running in the background will help games utilize more of the system resources...

Close/exit all none essential items in the system tray apart from the likes of Anti Virus, internet connection and firewall.... things like instant messengers, download managers etc etc

you can use CRTL - ALT - DEL to end background tasks but you really would have to know what those processes are first otherwise you put the OS into death mode, this is where EndItAll come sin handy as it does give you a description of what each process is..... so the answer is yes EndItAll will help you BUT it still needs some care on what to stop and what not to stop. ( I now gather EndItAll is not free but $$$ now )

best bet is if you have many items in the system tray stop them and see if that helps..

Gawd, that colour(OZ spelling) is hard on the eyes. I use enditall as a batch file every day to close down all the programs that I launch when on the net.

Do a google search for enditall (one word) and you will find lots of hits. I use version 2 which I think is the latest version. Use the /k parameter as I find it works best for me.

Listed below is my enditall.bat(ch) file to help you get started.

Lines with rem in front are for those programs I no longer run, or are reminders. Bat(ch) files ignores these lines. I no longer use AVG but use avast instead. Lines 1, 2 and 10 refer.

Batch file is in 8.3 short file name (SFN) format but works for me, every day.
Not sure if it works in long file name (LFN) format. I've forgotten if I tried that (LFN).

I use W98SE. Don't know if it works on any other OS.

    enditall.bat

    rem c:\progra~1\endita~1\enditall.exe /k:avgcc32.exe

    c:\progra~1\endita~1\enditall.exe /k:ashServ.exe
    c:\progra~1\endita~1\enditall.exe /k:leechget.exe
rem don't delete nprotect.exe as it protects deleted files
    rem c:\progra~1\endita~1\enditall.exe /k:nprotect.exe
echo off End of job !!!!

Hope this helps. Post again if you have problems and I will assist further. Bazza

EndItAll closes all processes except systray and explorer by default. You can configure it to close or leave open any process you wish. I've used it on WinME for a long time without a hitch.

Sorry about the font color. Just learning my way around.
I'm running a Dell 4500s series. Windows XP Home. CPu at 1.70 GHz. Ram at 384 MB, Integrated video card Intel 3D AGP.
I have 7 items in my systray. I have 33 Processes running!!
I shall do Google search for enditall and see what I can find.
Thank you all for your help. Please don't be surprised if I comback for more.

    Gus, Check out http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=37269

    and

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=36800 for earlier answers to this prob.

There is no correct answer to the number of processes that run on your PC.
Depends on what you are doing at the time. There maybe some nasties however so these 2 threads may help. Let us know how you go. Bazza

PS: Ethan to the rescue again, I see. Baz

    To Ethan:
My problem is frame rate. If you've run a Nascar sim, you know the better the frame rate, the smoother and more accurate your moves become. I thought that by reducing the number of processes running, my frame rate would improve.
As far as my age goes, I'm a senior citizen. LOL
I think the addy I gave you is good, I just tried it again.
Amazingly enough, My puter doesn't crash, ever. Knock on wood, or plastic, or something! Hummm.
Now for my next question, as you know by now, I run Windows XP Home. This EndItAll program doesn't list this as one of the OS's approved. Can I use it?

Anyone interested in learning about processes should check out Pacs-portal. It is a valuable learning tool regarding startup processes. I went from an average of 55 running processes to around 20. Check it out - you will learn what is needed & what is optional.

Yes GUS ..... I installed it just to test out and works ok... the help is worth a read to get to grips with the software and what should be left on or not.

aslo as Slim rightly says at 33 processes running, not excessive BUT you MAY well have 1 or 2 that are not really needed for your setup.... check out either Pacs Portal or Black Viper

    Pacs Portal
    http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php ( main page )
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php ( the List ... loooooong, but use the search function find out if whats in your startup is needed or not )

    Black Viper

Another thing to look at unless you already have is as you are using XP, do you use the all glitzy warm and funky look with fading menus, translucent bits? if so that will eat up cpu time, possibly turn of the funky look options are found in System Properties > Advanced > under Performace click settings and there are a few pre defined setting I would try out "Adjust for best performance" if you dont like the way XP acts in relation to menus then just set it back to what it was originaly.

Also stick in the Performace Options and click Advanced you will see processor scheduling, if the two options are not set to Programs then set them so CPU and Memory are first utilized by the running program rather than background/cache task.

altho tweaking these items will help, the limiting factor will always be the framerate ( FPS ) of the GFX card, bus speeds etc etc

All you guys have been very helpful and I appreciate it much.
I will try the suggestions made, I guess I have a bunch to learn about processes before I start messing with this.
    Thank you again
