    Hi
I was wondering,i have got an aspire 7736z with 4.00 gb ram is that sufficient,i am asking this question because my notebook is almost 3 years old,but only 285gb harddrive,so the real question is should i purchase a laptop with more power and a larger harddrive(for my music collection)or should i wait and be satisfied with my seagate expansion drive(1,82TB)

    Kind Regards Psychedelicmaniac:confused

Your RAM is sufficient so I would wait for the external drive. ;)

Actually, your question really does not make sense.

You said you have a notebook with 4Gb of RAM then asked, "is that sufficient?" Then you wonder about your disk space for music. One really has nothing to do with the other.

Is 4Gb of RAM enough? We have no way of telling because we don't know what operating system you are using, if it is 64-bit or 32-bit, and most importantly, we don't know how your use your computer, other than for listening to music. If you have a 32-bit OS, then 4Gb is all you can use so the question is moot. If you have a 64-bit OS, and you run several resource intensive applications at once - especially with integrated graphics hogging a big chunk of your RAM, then you will certainly seem some performance gains by adding another 2 - 4Gb of RAM.

Adding a bigger hard drive will have zero to barely perceptible impact on performance - unless you are so critically low on space now that your Page File is unable to function properly. It will just give you more room for more music.

Finally, you ask, "should I purchase a new notebook with more power and a larger hard drive?" Again, we don't know. Does this notebook's performance meet your needs now (other than space for music)? Since adding a new drive to your current system will not improve performance, maybe putting the money from that Seagate towards a new, more powerful machine (with more RAM, 64-bit Windows 7, and a bigger drive) is the right answer after all.

Based on what little info your question provided:
To listen to music, it's plenty good enough. If you need more storage, you can upgrade the internal hard drive. These 1TB hard drives will triple your storage space for a fraction of the price of a new laptop. This is a more portable setup than your current laptop and external drive but replacing the internal hard drive may be out of your comfort zone while paying someone to do it might just make upgrading to newer hardware a better and cheaper option.

Since you are running 64-bit Windows, you could increase your RAM and add more disk space for improved performance and more space and still not spend as much as you would on a new computer.

Now increasing RAM from the starting point of 4Gb will not be as significant as it would be from 2Gb, but it will improve performance because Windows itself will use those upper memory addresses. If your programs are 64-bit, they will take advantage of that memory too.

Since RAM is cheap, and drive prices are coming back down after the floods, that would be my suggestion - unless, of course you are just looking for an excuse to buy a new computer. And in that case, today (Dec 24th) may be a good day to do that.
