In an attempt to correct a problem, a tech support person at a software company set up a new user on my Windows 98 computer. Sadly, his change didn't work and now every time I boot up my computer the pop-up box named "Enter Password" asks for a user name and a password even though there are none. I would like this pop-up box to not appear when booting up. Any suggestions?

    Give this a try: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;152104&Product=w98

This worked for me in WinME (which is 98SE with a top hat IMHO)

By standard there is only a single user profile, which is automaticly logged in, but if Network Neighborhood is installed then it might request for login. This login can be disabled by going to Control Panel -> Network-Applet -> Configuration-Tab -> Change "Primary Network Logon" from "Client for Microsoft Network" to "Windows Logon"

I've never had any trouble changing the primary network logon and still having network access

It should be as simple as Boccemon explained it.

Thanks, for all the responses. I have it fixed. Article 152104 mentioned in the first reply got the *.pwl files deleted (actually renamed to .OLD as the article suggests and Article 156826 How to Disable and Delete User Profiles was used. Thanks for all your help! :)
