I have recently acquired a secondhand Epson 8400 printer. It will copy documents and photos alright and prints from a Pictbridge camera.
But I can't get my PC to recognise it. After trying to connect it for a few minutes I get a message to the effect that the printer is not connected or is the wrong type.
I am offered the choice of several COM and LPT ports to connect to manually, I assume that as it is a usb connection these are not relevant, is that right.
The usb lead works on another device. Have tried another PC and downloaded a driver from Epson
The usb lead is not connected to the printer until the program asks for it
    I'm using Xp

    HELP please

"Have tried another PC and downloaded a driver from Epson"

You tried it on another PC, did that machine recognize it?

No it was the same on both PC's. The only external device I have been able to print from is a Kodak camera.

I'm reading others who have had trouble getting this model installed. One person solved it by

Your reply prompted me to try google again and I found this in '' How to mend it''. Problem solved. On mine it was tucked away at the back of the Left hand side. No mention of it in the literature.

You cannot connect via the FRONT A type usb socket.
Look at Rear (right hand) inset is the B type socket you need to use. How? insert your install CD and select CUSTOM install.
DO NOT PLUG IN THE CABLE YET. A picture box screen pops to tell you when. You will see printer icon to the right bottom of screen next to clock if all is ok

Many thanks for your time, Mike.

    Hi Mike,

You did download and install a printer driver? Everything that is working is internal to the printer? It probably needs a driver to talk to the PC.

    Good Luck, Jim
