    PC is running Win 7
    Newer Dell desktop 8GB RAM
    DSL connection

The above printer printed fine for a while with both a direct cable connection and the WI-FI.
After non use for about 3 months, the PC and the printer now do not communicate.....cable or WI-FI
    I get messages saying this.
It will print a test page ok but nothing else.
I have downloaded drivers from Epson to no avail.

I had the same problem and gave up on a Epson WF 2540. No communication between the PC and the printer. (different PC's)

The WF 3520 is out of warranty but is less than 2 years old.

    Any clues please?

Because you haven't used the printer in several months, the lease for its IP expired.

Go through setting up wifi again (from what I could see in the manual it starts on page 29). This will assign an IP to the printer again and the computer and the printer should be able to see each other

I disabled the WI-FI and set it up again to include the password.
The printer automatically "found" my IP.

Then a "check network connection" was printed out using the keyboard on the printer when it prompted me to.

All connection tests passed and said the network is working correctly.
    Signal strength excellent.

A file (PDF) was brought up on my PC and I hit "print".
Nothing happened...no dialog box saying the PDF was in que.
Actually zero happened......no printer noise, no error messages.....just nothing.
Two other file types (photo and a plain document will not print)

One time I got a dialog box (photo) that said the printer was not responding.

Printer is on....WI-FI on and connected.
Cassette has paper. Ink levels are ok.

I uninstalled everything related to the printer on the PC. Drivers etc.
Reinstalled from the Epson provided install/setup CD.

Instead of using the WI-FI, I set up using a direct Ethernet connection from my router.

Amazingly, the PC now talks to the printer or visa versa.
Viola.....it prints what I want it to print.

    Problem solved......thank you

Well I'm glad you at least have a functioning printer.
My printers, currently 5 in the house, do not do wifi. I have one attached to my router and set up so that 6 of the computers can print to it as well as a printer directly attached to some of the desktop computers.

You might be able to go through the same routine with your older Epson that suffered the same kind of problem.
I had a non-functioning HP AIO. I bought another HP AIO and through the process of trying to use the cartridges from the non-functioning one, discovered that a new HP cartridge was bad. I replaced the black in both and now both work. <sigh> So that's how I ended up with a 5th printer and the 2nd AIO we really didn't need.

In retrospect.....I believe the culprit was a VPN program I was using.
My virus detection did not like "strongdial.exe" one bit.

Once the virus detection deleted that, everything came back to life.....including the internet speed.

FYI this VPN is StrongVPN.com with the server in San Francisco.

I have zero evidence that indeed, this was/is the culprit that knocked out my printer network, but it is highly suspicious, and once removed, all is well.

    ;)
