I have an Asus laptop X555D, Win10. Often when starting I get a blue screen with an error message. I have found that if hold down the power key for a long time, force a restart, it will go away and start normally. That does not work anymore. I could be wrong, but it seems to commonly occur after an update. I created a Media Recovery Tool and it said "Attemptoing Repairs" The repairs failed. I am back to the blue screen again. What next?

On the blue screen I have 3 options: 1 Press Enter to try again, 2 Press F8 to enter recovery environment, 3 Press Esc for UEFI Firmware settings

I would roll with F8 to get into recovery, use the command prompt and repair the master boot record. If that doesn't work, a full reinstall may be considered.

Is this machine malware free, and have you completed a hardware assessment?

Eldon, thanks for the link I will keep it for reference. Somehow I got to where I could so a complete reinstall and that worked. Mekanic, it is malware free, but i have not checked the hardware. What do you recommend for that?

I dragged out this machine, and repeated what I did in the above. I wiped out everything and reinstalled windows via recovery. Then I set it up just like it was a new machine (which is what it acted like). This morning I turned it on and............same old thing error code 0cx0000185. Is there some software-preferably free- that I can use to check the machine myself? Asus support said that would be the next thing.

Windows Recovery does not "wipe out everything". It can and has left the master boot record untouched, which is why rootkits normally survive a Windows reinstall.

I would start with the command prompt, and the fixmbr command. If that failed, I would burn a copy of Kasperky's rescue disk and scan for rootkits. If that comes back clean, I would then reseat the RAM, and burn a copy of MemTest 86 to eliminate the modules as a cause. If the RAM is not the issue, I would then burn a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD, and test the hard drive. If all that comes back clean, I would then scorch the hard drive using a copy of Darik's Boot and Nuke to completely start over and install Windows clean from a disk. You can access your license key using an Administrative command prompt from the Windows 32 folder.

how do I get to command prompt when all that pops up is that blue screen?

W10 recovery/install disk. Should boot unless you have hardware issues. If not, boot disk utilities like Ultimate Boot CD are the best diagnostic option.

It must be hardware, I tried the W10 recovery/install. Using the back up now, may take it to a shop, may not, I got everything important off it.
