ARGH!! It seems like very time I blink, there's something new wrong with this stupid laptop. :cry

First off, I'm running Windows XP. I'm not sure what other info y'all will need from me.

I am trying to share my iTunes library with other computers on my network. My library title shows up on iTunes on the other computers, but when I click on it, I get this error:

The shared library "Insert Witty Title Here" is not responding. (-3259)

Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689.

I decided to try disabling my firewall to see if that made a difference, and realized that I'm not even sure which one I have running. So I went to the Windows Security Center and got this error:

The Security Center is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service), and then open the Security Center again.

So I went to services.msc and tried to start the Security Center service, and got yet another error message:

Could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer.

Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.

One last thing: I'm also trying to allow simple file sharing. When I go to My Network Places, I can see the shared folders that are on the network, including my own. However, my files and folder and inaccessible and invisible from the other computers on the network.

Those instructions talk about changing the drive names and stuff like that... I'd rather not do that, as it's only my computer (out of 5) that isn't sharing, and I am not allowed to change settings on the other computers since they're not mine.

What about the other issues I mentioned, though? I'm more concerned with the Security Center errors and the local file sharing.

    Security Center service depends on:
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    Event Log
    Windows Management Instrumentation

So go into your services and be sure these are set to automatic then try and start the Security Center service.

    They are all running.

When I go into properties for "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)," the options for startup type, start, stop, pause, and resume are all grayed out. But it shows that it's automatic and running. On the "Event Log," I can change the startup type if I want but the rest of the buttons are grayed out here also. On "Windows Management Instrumentation," only start, pause, and resume are grayed out.

Even though I can't change a lot of them, they all show as automatic and running.

Access the services through this route
    Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Component Services
You should be able to highlight any service and change it to what you want.
    Can you highlight RPC?

I don't run XP on any of my computers so I have nothing called Windows management Instrumentation.

I have the same options for RPC through that route, but I noticed that the RPC Locater, which is listed right below RPC, is showing Manual and doesn't seem to be started. Should that one also be Auto & started?

For this, I just change the .txt file to a .reg file and run it from my desktop, correct?

I ran the .reg file, but I am still getting error 1075. I haven't seen anything about the error on that site, unless I am looking in the wrong places...?

The black viper site was not about your error. It was so you could check all your services against his list to see if everything is as it should be.

Ohhhh. Derrr. LOL I'm a little unsure about which column I should be looking at. (I'm apprehensive about changing ANY settings on here without lots of guidance; when it comes to computers I am an accident waiting to happen.)

    The one marked "SAFE".
As it says above the chart

Okay... I looked through that list and changed some of the stuff around to match the "safe" list.

The "Indexing Service" was automatic; when I clicked on properties to change it to disabled I get this error: "Configuration Manager: The specified device instance handle does not correspond to a present device." When I click OK, it goes into properties anyway. When I switched from automatic to disabled and clicked apply, I got the same error message, but the option did change to disabled.

These are listed in my services, but not on the Black Viper website:
.NET Runtime Optimization Service v2.0.50727_X86 (manual, started)
    Apple Mobile Device (automatic, started)
ASP.NET State Service (manual, not started)
    Basics service (automatic, started)
    Bonjour service (disabled)
Cisco Systems, Inc. VPN Service (automatic, started)
    Clipbook (disabled)
Dell Wireless WLAN Tray Service (automatic, started)
    GoToAssist (manual, not started)
HID Input Service (automatic, started) - is this the same as Human Interface Device Access?
InstallDriver Table Manager (manual, not started)
    iPod Service (Manual, not started)
    Java Quick Starter (automatic, started)
    Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service (automatic, started)
LiveShare P2P Server 9 (automatic, not started)
    LVCOMSer (automatic, started)
    LVSrvLaucher (automatic, not started)
Media Center Extender Service (automatic, started)
    Process Monitor (automatic, started)
Roxio Hard Drive Watcher 9 (automatic, not started)
Roxio UPnP Renderer 9 (manual, not started)
Roxio Upnp Server 9 (automatic, not started)
    RoxMediaDB9 (manual, not started)
Windows Driver Foundation - User-mose Driver Framework (manual, not started)
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service (manual, not started)

The "Safe" column doesn't say whether the services should be started or stopped. How do I know which ones are correct?

By the way... I called Dell yesterday about another issue I was having with my Media Center. They told me that a registry key had been deleted, but they didn't know which one, so they weren't able to help me. o_O Any ideas on THAT?

Um, no. If Dell doesn't know, I would not attempt to guess what is missing.
