Bought a Dell Inspiron 660s desktop with Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit and am getting Error 1303.

Error 1303. Microsoft Works cannot be installed to the selected drive. Type or select another drive, such as drive C or drive D.

During install, it defaults to the following install location:
    C:\Program Files (x86)Microsoft Works/

It has only one HD, and I've installed Works 9 on numerous XP and Vista machines w/o a hitch in the past. If any other info is needed, I'll be glad to furnish it.

    Any ideas out there? Thanks.

Info is hard to find because MS wants to sell Office but here is the starting page for help with Works v 9
    http://support.microsoft.com/ph/12025
I can't get any of the links on the page to open. :(
the links point to something like file:/// rather than an http site

plodr, the page won't even open for me. Thanks anyway. Just can't imagine why I've NEVER had probs. installing Works 9 until I get a machine with Win 7 on it. So far, Win 7 isn't impressing me much cuz I had to jump thru hoops to get MS Office 2010 installed, but finally did.

I think FalconAttack is on the right track. The older program probably doesn't have permission to write to the Program Files (86) folder. Even though ou have Administrative privileges Vista/7 has very tight controls on who can write to that folder

Try right-clicking the installer and selecting Run as Administrator and see if that helps. If not try right-clicking it and choosing Troubleshoot Compatibility and use the recommended setting.

If neither works then I would use falconattack's link to take ownership of the program files (86) folder. It seems redundant but it should fix things up.

sach2, hello again. U solved a pc prob. I had with a neighbor's pc about a month ago--glad to hear from u again.

I had already taken ownership of the Program Files (x86) folder, created a new acct. and tried install, ran as administrator in both accts. and it still WILL NOT install. (Wants me to select another drive). Sorry I didn't include this info in my original post.

I ran the Troubleshoot Compatibility w/recommended setting as u suggested (even tried the Troubleshoot Program mode>The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won't install or run now). Nothing makes her want to install.

I'm sure it is a permissions problem because I remember having it on one of my early Win7 installations. It has to do with protecting that folder from unwanted programs.

What does it show if you go to the Security tab and then the Advanced button for that folder? Maybe that will tell us something.

Sorry it took so long to get to u guys w/this prob., but I worked all day yesterday and stopped just long enough to gobble down some turkey. lol

Since my last post, I wasn't making any headway at all, so I did a Sys. Rec. using my Rec. Part.--still no luck.

My son bought the same machine, so I used his recovery disks and did ANOTHER Sys. Rec.--this time, success!!!!!! Office Pro Plus and Works 9 went in like a top. No probs. whatsoever this time with that. The only thing I can figure is that maybe my Rec. Part. is a dud on a new pc?????

Made copies of his recovery disks and filed mine in File 13. All was going good til I tried to open Docs. & Settings--Access Denied. Read everything I could find to take control of the thing, but I don't know what I'm doing concerning permissions, ownership, etc.

I think I've included a shot of what it shows in her old craw if I did it right.

If this isn't the right forum for this prob., just tell me where to go (I'm used to it--been told where to go LOTS of times).

    Hi,

This is Win7 so Documents and Settings is a "symbolic link" folder it doesn't really exist. It is there for older programs that need it for the way they were written. It points them over to the appropriate Win7 folder to store their settings. I don't think you ever will get access to it.

In Win7 the information that used to be stored in Docs and Settings is actually in the Users folder. Perhaps you can find what you are looking for there?

OK, sach2, that makes sense to me now. But when I try to open C:\Users\All Users (this folder is the one that I DEFINITELY want to open cuz I use it so much, I get the following msg.:

C:\Users|All Users refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

How can this be on a fresh Sys. Rec. (just this afternoon), and how can I gain access to this folder as it's the one I use so much?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

I just right clicked on All Users>Properties and it shows:

    Target: H:\Program Data

What gives? I have no H:\ drive. I don't aim to be dumb, but maybe these Win 7 probs. i'm having are just a learning curve I haven't mastered yet. lol

I think you might be better off hiding some of the Hidden and System files until you get used to navigating Win7. Those locks on certain folders are there for a reason. You shouldn't really need to access them.

All your files will be in C:\users\yourusername

    ***
I have no idea why the All Users folder would be pointing to an H: drive. Again, Program Data folder is a hidden folder you shouldn't need to access regularly.

What exactly are you trying to do?

I always have tried to pare down my Programs List by installing, say, Office Pro Plus, Works, Wordpad, Notepad, etc., and then create a new folder called "Office Programs", then move all of them into the new folder I created.

Same with Financial, Photo Editing, Genealogy, Audio-Video, Utilities, Malware Scanning Programs, etc. That way, they weren't scattered all up and down the Programs List. It was just so much handier for me to arrange them that way.

You should be able to click Start and then right-click All Programs and then choose Open. From there you could try creating your Office Programs folder and dragging the associated programs from other folders into that folder. (Might be wise to create a Restore Point before doing it in case you don't like the result. Right-click Computer choose Properties then choose System Protection and then Create button.)

Edit: Just for clarity Open will open your user profile Programs list. All Users opens a separate list that shows for all users along with their personal list.
So your list includes everthing you see when you open Users and also everything in All Users. There are probably duplicates. The Open list is most important to not delete but move items around in because if you delete them and they do not show in All Users you will lose the shortcut.
( I know this is unclear so I can try to explain better if you don't understand.)

U know more than one way to skin a cat sach2. I think that'll work--I gave 'er a whirl and she made a new folder on my Programs List called "Office Programs". You're a gentleman and a scholar, my friend.

    Thanks again.
