    Hi Everybody,

I'm a bit of a novice where computers are concerned and i'm sure there's an easy solution to my problem.

We have a "Pay as you go" internet access- based in UK, which worked fine up to about a week ago. The next time we tried to connect to the internet the error message...."Error 633" came up ....i've tried all the windows troubleshooting guides to no avail. I've tried System Restore to a previous date ( before it went wrong) to no avail. I've tried to search for telephon.ini to rename it to telephon.old....but i can't find this on my system

I see that this is a common problem on XP judging by various web reports i've read . Someone mentioned to install service pack 2 which should help correct the problem but i've yet to try this.

    Would appreciate any assistance.

    Thanks

    Hi,

    Thanks for your interest.

The Error refers to the fact that the port could not be opened and that another device(such as fax etc.,) may be using the Com3 port or the modem isn't configured. I don't have anything else connected other than a printer! I've checked the device manager which says there are no conflicts anywhere but when i go into device manager the only port shown is the printer LPT1 port.Com 3 which is the port chosen by the modem upon installation isn't shown on devce manager.

The modem log shows "Opening the mdem device failed with error 000005aa"

    Thanks

is it your only way to get on the internet at home?

No.....but my son uses internet at home for homework etc.,

Looks as tho' i'm going to have to bite the bullet and get Broadband at home with new modem ( we have broadband at work) but the amount of internet use at home doesn't really justify having it.

    well you could always
A: when you get home find your system manufacturer and model on the laptop and post it here from your sons PC
    or B: network them
