Hello! When I shut down my computer, it takes like 45 seconds. And about 50% of the time I get this error:

    navapsvc.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x0040a31e" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.

I have traced this to a Norton AntiVirus:
    C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus

I know a lot of you don't like Norton, but I love it.

Any suggestions on how to fix this let me know!

    Thanks a lot!

did you run live update to see if there were any patches available?

Heres what LIUtilities has to say about the process:
    WinTasks Process Library

    navapsvc - navapsvc.exe - Process Information
    Process File: navapsvc or navapsvc.exe
Process Name: Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service
Description: Background application for Norton AntiVirus that provides auto-protection features to the system. It runs on Windows NT/2000/XP.
    Company: Symantec Corporation
    System Process: No
    Security Risk ( Virus/Trojan/Worm/Adware/Spyware ): No
    Common Errors: N/A

So, you might want to turn the background protection off in Norton or reconfigure maybe.

Does he have one of these OS? This same thing in Norton System Works caused havoc in my Win ME. Had to uninstall.

I have Windows XP. How do I shut off this process?

Very good point Bman. I can see how such a thing would raise heck with a 9X system.

    Anyone familar with Norton AV?

I don't run Norton, but it should have within the program (in "configure" maybe) a means to turn off automatic background scanning and let you do your own scheduling. Anyone out there familiar with Norton who could tell Mikey how to shut down the background scan?

If it's running in the taskbar, just right click it and uncheck "enable file system realtime protection".

    Did you try Kodo's suggestion?

If it's up-to-date, you could try uninstalling NAV, running this, then reinstall NAV...

I agree with the Cowboy, switch to an AV that doesn't cause you these problems.

I think that's what he wanted to do Cowboy. He wanted to shut it down and then schedule scans do correct a shutdown problem. Correct me if I misread it.

I've got the same problem, MikeyG, running Norton Internet Security/Norton Anti-Virus 2004 under Windows XP. And all the Symantec tech suggests is that you simply remove NAV? Ouch!

There's nothing on the Symantec site about this error (nor is there anything about NAV/NIS failing to install the Web Assistant icon in Internet Explorer that allows you to override the pop-up blocker for site where you need to see spawned windows).

Sorry to say it, but this is really bush-league software if the latest-and-greatest version hasn't fixed these bugs. And as for support? It's all pay, and a hefty tab at that! What do the MajorGeeks recommend as a replacement?

    And thanks!

I like Avast, doesn't miss nasties, not too hard on the resources, and you can't beat the price...;)

Believe me, you're not the 1st person around here to have problems with Norton  :p

    Solution from Symantec?!!!

I too have exactly the same error when shutting down my PC. I contacted Symantec support and fortunately got a more helpful answer.

This issue occurs due to the conflict between Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 2004 and other programs, which load with Windows. To isolate a potential conflict between two software or drivers, please follow this procedure:
    1. Click on Start and then click on Run.

    2. Type Msconfig

    3. Click on OK. (The System Configuration utility opens).

    4. Click on Selective Startup.

    5. Under Selective Startup, uncheck "Load Startup Group Items".

    6. Click on the Startup tab.

    7. Uncheck everything

    8. Click on OK, and restart your computer for the change to take effect.

At this point, you should no longer experience the issue. To start loading things back in one at a time so you can identify the application or driver that is triggering the issue, please do the following:

    1. Click on Start->Run.

    2. Type Msconfig

    3. Click on OK. (The System Configuration utility opens).

    4. Click on the Startup tab.

    5. Keep all of the items we originally disabled above, and check one more thing in this list.

    6. Click on OK, and restart your computer.

    7. Test for the issue.

If the issue does not reproduce, repeat steps 1-7, adding one item at a time, until you reproduce the issue. The last thing you checked will be the item that is triggering the conflict. You will want to leave this item unchecked in the future.

Not really a solution but it is a common sense troubleshooting plan. I'll give it a shot and see how it goes. Perhaps if you let me know what you have loading up we could speed up the process to see if there is anything common between our setups. FYI, I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 8600.

    Regards,

    Pookah

Yeah you are right, its not a solution.

I don't have any more respect for Symantec than I did before reading that.

To continue on that trend of troubleshooting, which was fine until you get to the part of leaving the item(s) unchecked in the future, you will want to find out what those apps are and possibly try reinstalling them, or stop them from loading at startup. Use either the program configuration or remove them from where they are loading.

Leaving msconfig in a selective startup for any non power user (no offense to anyone who falls into that category) is just a bad idea.

My two cents, take it or leave it ;)

I can sympathise. I had the same problem when I first started here. ;)
At the top of this thread there is a button "Post Reply". Above that are the links that take you back through the hierarchy, "Software", "Help and Technical Forums" and MajorGeeks Support Forums. If you click on "Software", it will take you to a list of all the threads in the subforum called Software. At the top of that list, is a similar button to the "Post Reply" button which is called "New Thread". If you push that button it will start a new thread in the software section. If you want to post a new thread in another section, like hardware or malware, link over to the "Help and Technical Forums", choose a subforum and again, you'll see the "New Thread" button at the start of that subforum.
