Error during Vista upgrade

I have a client's PC here and their HD crashed. I installed a new 320gb SATA drive and it turns out they're running Vista Ultimate X86 installed from an upgrade disc. The only upgrade disc I have on-hand for Vista must be run from within the OS being upgraded (meaning that I have to insert the disc from the XP desktop). So installed a clean WinXP Home SP3 and all the drivers. I did NOT activate 'cuz I figured I'm going straight to Vista so what's the use (and the product key I used is actually from a different PC; I only used it 'cuz it would be temporarily in use just for the pre-Vista install of XP). Anyway.... I pop in the Vista disc, I type in the Vista product key, and every goes fine until I hit about 88% and then I get an error: "Files needed could not be read or are corrupt. No changes have been made to computer" or something VERY close to that. The error code 0x80070017 accompanies this message. The little research I've done tells me that this error typically comes from a poorly burned install disc. Well, I tried 2 different install discs and 2 different DVD drives and I still get the exact same error at the exact same place during the install. What's up??? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

 

Oh yeah - my Vista install disc is SP1 if it matters....

Just wanted to say that it is possible to do a clean install of vista with only the upgrade media should every need to do so in the future. Maybe doing it this way would eliminate the error.

Edit: Maybe would pay to run a disk diagnostic on the drive.

Drive diagnostic is not gonna help - the HD is brand-spankin-new and I installed clean WinXP Home to it first, so I know the drive was not the problem... besides..... problem solved. Instead of using the "Upgrade Install" option, I used the other one (I don't remember exactly what it's called) and it worked.
