Error In Win2000!

I'm running Win2000Pro w\SP4 and I keep getting this error message when I try to install certain games or other software. It states that an error has occured in 'ins5176_MP.exe' and windows will close the application. The only thing I could learn about this so far is that this error is common to SP4 in Win2000. Does anyone know of a fix for this? I tried the Microsoft site, but couldn't find anything. THANKS!!!!

 

Have you tried removing Sp4? They are going to release ps4 again, which should fix many issues it caused.

 

I wish I could remove it, but the disc I bought already had SP4 on it and there is no way to remove it.

The error you are experiencing is an installshield error. Do you have Java installed on your machine? SP4 for 2000 removed the MS Java VM.

 

just to clarify, it's not an issue with SP4.

 

Thanks for the replies and at least now I know from where that error originates. As for Java, no I haven't installed it, do I need too? Sorry, but I'm not to techie when it comes to things like this However, I am learning!!! Again, THANKS for your replies, they were very much appreciated.

 

You don't really need Java installed. However there are several web sites that make use of Javascript and those pages won't display properly without Java installed. If you wish to install a Java Runtime here is the link to the latest version.

Thanks for the link to Java. I've downloaded it and installed it with no problem. I also downloaded that Update rollup for Win2000 SP4 you mentioned eariler but, unfortunately, that error message still rears it's ugly head!! Oh well, what the heck, I can live with it. But I do thank-you for taking your time to help me and, as before, it is very much appreicated

 

There are some games and software that use an older version of installshield that just won't run on Windows 2000. What games/software are you trying to install when you get that error?

 

Hi again! Well, the Quake 2 Mission Packs are the two, so far, that have given me that error. There is also an office program from Trend Micro that used to do it, but they have a fix for it on their site. However, that fix only takes care of their product, which is understandable!! Personally, I like the older games alot better than I do the newer ones. To me, thay have more re-playability and more 'personality' than the newer ones. Granted, the graphics aren't as good, but they play better. As a matter-of-fact, the newest game I own is "UT", or "Half-Life" (can't remember which one got released first). Sorry about that, I didn't mean to ramble on, but I have tendency to do that from time to time

 

The Quake 2 Mission Packs are 2000 compatible. Have you tried runnig the setup.exe in the install directory on the CD instead of the setup.exe in the root directory.

 

Actually, no I haven't. I've always run it from the root directory, however, it is worth a try. I've already installed the games manually by taking the 'data' folder from the cd and pasting into the proper folder in the Q2 directory and it works fine, but I'm going to try it the way you suggested to see what happens. I'll let ya know!
