"error loading operating system "

    I just bought a desktop from Craig's list it is a Dell Optiplex DX GX 110 and
    the operating system is windows XP pro. my son is only used it for a week now
    and he said that the windows does not update because there is a warning that
    the windows installed is a fake one..but yesterday when he try to open the
    desktop the OS does not run anymore the monitor is all black except for the
    message that it say "error loading operating system " . what I did is to run the
    disc that I received from the buyer when I bought it, it has a note paste on the
    disc saying XP-pro with license number although I know it is not an original one I tried it but the computer doesn't read the disc and it freeze. I try to contact
    the buyer but they say they already move out of Austin..

    My question is if I buy a new Operating System original Windows XP Home and
    try it on the computer will fix my problem ?

    Not good on the buyer already gone, sadly one of the perils of buying PCs this way, but while a new XP and legit one may fix this, I just wonder if their is another issue at hand, maybe failing hard drive!?!

    Hopefully no important files need to be recovered from this PC as its only been in use a short time?

    Enter the PCs BIOS at boot (key to press should be visable for quick time) and check in the menus that the hard drive is recognised and that 1st boot device is hard drive then save and exit.

    If you have any floppy disks in the floppy drive remove them and reboot.

    What I would try before resorting to buying a version of XP is to install a version of Linux, an easy one is Kubuntu if it installs ok then your hardware is likely fine and will install XP.


    Will need ImgBurn to burn the ISO to Disk if your CD burning software isnt capable of this.

    I already have downloaded Kubunto and it's on the CD ready to install but the problem is
    the Dell Optiplex GX 110 hard drive memory or capacity is only 105 MB not enough memory
    to install Kubunto or Windows XP pro...that's why i realized the buyer were able to install
    a fake OS because of this limited memory of the hard drive.
