    Hello,

I installed new RAM yesterday and have had 2 system crashes since. I took a screenshot of the most recent error report and thought I'd ask if anyone here knows what this is about. I am thinking I need to go back to the old RAM.

    eMachines with AMD Athlon 2850e
    Windows XP sp3
    removed 1 GB of DDR2 PC2-6400 (1 stick)
    installed 4 GB of DDR2 PC2-6400 (2 X 2GB)

Does anybody know what this is about before I just go return the new memory sticks?

    Thanks,

    Dave

First, check the specs in your owners manual on on line at eMachine's web site. Some older systems will only accept a total of 2GB (2 sticks of 1GB each). If this is the case, the 2GB sticks may be incompatible with your PC.

If you're sure your machine will take 4GB (2x2GB), I'd return what you have now and try a different brand. On a basic PC like yours, stay away from "gaming" memory and stick with something basic (I've had the best luck with Crucial, Kingston and A-Data).

    Hope this helps. :)

I think 4 gigs is a bit much for XP..

    1. Try to load only 1 stick (2gb) then see if the error comes back.
    2. Then add the 1gb chip see if you get the error

I feel 3gb of Ram for XP is more then enough.

If you need to test the ram download this Ram test http://www.memtest86.com/

Hi, everyone, and thanks for all the suggestions. I was trying to run the memtest86 when it crashed again, and I just decided to return it and try another brand. My eMachines is 4 gb capable (I checked before buying) and I am just using basic memory, nothing special like gaming. I had Patriot the first time and switched to PNY. I don't see any indication of high or low density, but so far so good. No more crashes.

    I appreciate all the help.

Just a comment here, since the machine seems stable, I doubt you need more help: Don't worry about compatibility at all. Memory is digital, as are most computer parts, which means it either works or it doesn't, and there is no middle ground. So if the computer boots and recognizes the full amount of memory, you have compatible parts, simple as that.

If the crashes stopped when you took out the first 4GB and put in a different set of 4GB, then most likely it was just a bad module. 9 times out of 10, when a computer crashes or has errors after you've installed new memory, that's all there is. :)
