    Hi There,

Sorry to bother you guys but I have been going nuts trying to stop an error message (1606) from popping up every time I try to install the WinTasksPro Trial on my computer. The message say that the installation cannot continue because it can't access the network location for %userprofile%\recent\ and terminates the process.

I have checked on Microsoft's help page for this and the advice it gives is to enter the reg edit go to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

and change the value setting for the Common Administrative Tooks to '%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools'.

I have tried this and rebooted but when I do I still have the problem and it has returned to its former setting, doh! I'm not that great with the tech side of things but I'm guessing that possibly a program I run to protect me from spware etc may be stopping any changes to the registry, but thought you guys may have a better idea. I'm running Windows XP, and the following programs run on start up:

    Winpatrol
    Zone Labs Pro (just Firewall)
McAffee Virus Scan and Security Centre
    AVG Free Virus checker
    eZ Shield Protector for Px
Ad Aware SE Personal (though not sure if this is running all the time)

I have done the tutorial on cleaning up spyware (booting in safe mode and following instructions) and this seems to have worked a treat so thanks for that.

    Hope you can help,

    Cheers,

Microsoft's help page addressed a 1606 error, but not the same exact error. So, it only stands that their resolution will not work.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
    Look to the right
    Recent is probably invalid.

    It should read:
    %USERPROFILE%\Recent

    Hi there,

I hadn't noticed that the error message on microsoft was a different one to the 1606 I get, that would certainly explain why it isn't doing anything! To be honest, I don't really understand why the computer is even trying to access that point in the registry (as it only says this for the Wintasks install, whereas I've had no problems installing anything else). I went back to the registry and in that folder, sure enough, there is no entry that has on the right '%USERPROFILE%\Recent'.

Does this mean I should make a new entry in that folder of the registry, or, as the Microsoft help suggests, should I try and change this in the 'Common Administrative Tools' string? I'm confused!

Also, I fear that should I attempt such a change, my computer will likely 'correct' it for me. I know this is probably due to some setting I've requested, but it's a case of not knowing where to look to change this.

On this point, I ommitted to mention that I also use 'TweakNowRegCleaner' and 'Registry Mechanic 3.0' (don't know whether they might have any effect). Thanks very much for your help, really appreciated,
