Every time I install software now I get an error message that says MSVFW32.dll is linked to missing ntdll.dll

What does this mean? The software will not run. I got this again the other night after trying to reinstall AVG Free Anti-virus.

I have cleaned my machine of all spyware and viruses.

BTW, I am running Widdows ME. I wanted to run SFC but MS did not put the SFC program in Windows ME.

Is there a freeware registry checker/repairer out there somewhere? I suspect I have a corrupted dll file.

The PC works fine running existing programs and email.

Please help. No one in cyperspace has been able to solve this pesky problem.

UM, The reason for this is that a NTDLL.dll shouldn't exist on ME, it should only be on xp, 2000 or 2003.

I suspect a software installation has been run that wasn't meant for xp and it has replaced a system file (msvfw32.dll ) with a newer version that is meant for xp.

Can you remember what the last thing you installed before you started getting this error was ?

msvfw32.dll is something to do with Microsoft Video for Windows, and handles compression and decompression for bitmaps.

try downloading the windows ME version from here: http://www.dll-downloads.com/hosts.asp?msvfw32

Then: Boot into safe mode and search for msvfw32.dll rename each occurence to msvfw32.dll.ren and copy the one we just downloaded to its new location. once done reboot into normal mode and try again.

Sorry, I cannot. I have been fighting this problem for about 3 months now so I cannot tell you what software was installed before this error began.

I did try re-installiing the msvfw32.dll file but it blew away my NVidia video display settings so I went back in to safe mode and changed them back. Do I have to re-install NVidia after installing the ME version of MSVFW32.dll?

    Thanks.

I'd like to install Windows XP but cannot afford to do it. Windows XP should only cost $50 now instead of $150. At that price I might as well buy a new computer.

Try visiting the nvidea site and see if they provide drivers for ME, then download and install them. they might replace the file causing the problem

Already downloaded and installed the new driver. Problem still there. Do I need to install the new MSVF32.dll then download the Nvidia driver again? That's the problem. with the problems I am having with installing new software, I am a little scared to try this - hence my return to the old MSVFW32.dll file.

Im not too sure, I guess you could try it, I had you rename the old files for this very reason so you could revert if necesary, if you have the old file still you can always rename it back if it doesn't work.
