My little sister is trying to install Petz5 on her computer. Every time she tries she gets this error message:

    Component Transfer Error

    Component: Shared 2
    File Group: Area File Group
    File: D:/data2.cab
    Error: Incorrect Function

Is this a problem with the game, the CPU, or the CD drive? My sister has tried to install Dogz5 on the same computer, only to receive the same error message. Any help would be great...

    Thanks a bunch.

Your biggest problem is that you are a game pirate who doesn't know what he's doing or where to ask for help. If you had read the forum rules you would have known that this is the wrong forum for your problems. We don't help out with software/game piracy here.

Both those games are exclusive to the Nintendo DS. The solution to your problem is to buy your sister one of those, and then buy her the games themselves, rather than provide her with a ROM and an emulator, either of which isn't working right.

Actually, I take that back. Buy her something that actually has production value, instead of that garbage... rolleyes

    Hi folks

Just need to clarify this thread, reason being is that Mimsy is correct we do not condone the use of ROMs as per this sticky announcement ~ Keygen programs, emulators, and general stuff

However I did do a search on these mentioned games and they are available for PC as in Dogz 5 so if its a PC game as in the one I listed just now then it seems as if its for pre XP OSes, so maybe try installing the game in compatability mode for a lower Windows version, or check Ubisoft for any updates.

So please advise as to is it a PC game or a ROM from a Nintendo DS?

Also let us know what Windows version that PC has?

A possible fix is this http://consumerdocs.installshield.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=Q109010&sliceId=1 as that error can be due to conflicts with InstallShield

Easy done Mimsy, I know only too well.

But always good to be careful on what questions and answers we can give as we are a commercial forum, so bound by laws and the need to keep what could be an illegal activity out of the forum, which is why the need for the full story or issue is posted to allow us not to have to second guess.

@lhrwcomputers if you can answer our questions then hopefully if the PC varient of these games we can assist you and Mimsy is great with gaming issues.

    Yeah, okay,

    1. I'm NOT a pirate

    2. This is gaming software for the PC that is compatible with Windows XP/2000/98. My sister's computer has XP installed.

    3. She borrowed this from the library to install on her computer which is COMPLETELY legal. She's not stealing, she's not copying the gaming software and I have no idea what an emulater is.

So with that in mind, I'd thank you to ask questions before accusing me of doing something illegal.

I already said I'm sorry. There are Nintendo DS games with these names, available for sale everywhere. The PC games are older, and never reached a large audience. I made a mistake, and acknowledged I did.

Now can we move on and deal with this like adults?

If the game was borrowed from the library it's possible the disc has been scratched up and that's what is causing problems. Check the shiny surface of the CD, scratches that are barely visible can be enough to cause issues.

Have you tried running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98? Yes, it should work on XP, but since it doesn't we may as well try other options, right? :)

What do you mean run it in compatability mode for Windows 98? I don't have any computers with Windows 98 or 2000. I have Windows XP, Vista, and Xubuntu.

For clarity, I'm a teenage girl who's not familiar with all the "techy" talk.

I will check the disk for scratches. My sister just told me the disk worked on her computer before. Looking on the back of the box though, it does say this:

Notice: This game contains technology intended to prevent copying that may conflict with come CD-RW, DVD-RW, and virtual drives.

But if it already worked on her computer once before...doesn't that mean it IS compatible with her CD-RW drive?

The error message I quoted in my first post pops up at exactly 57% of the way installed every time.

    Thanks for the help.

If it wasn't compatible it would never have worked, so I think we can rule that out. That the problem happens at the same spot every single time makes it likely that it's the same thing that's causing it every single time... most common reasons are a scratch or a bad file on the disc.

To run a file in compatibility mode, you need to right-click on it, and then select properties. In the windows that comes up, you should see four tabs: General, Compatibility, Security, Summary.

Click on the compatibility tab, and check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for".

Pick Windows 98 / Windows ME in the drop-down menu, and click on Apply before you click on Okay. Then try to run the file again.

You should only need to do this on the main installation file, not on all of them. If you're not sure which one that is, they are usually called setup.exe, or a similar name. Worst case scenario, post a screenshot here, that shows all the files on the disc, and we'll figure out which one it is.

Will do. I'll try to get to that sometime this afternoon. Will let you know how it works...won't be able to post a screen shot though. Her PC isn't hooked up to the internet.

    Thanks again...

Do you have a USB key? If so, you can move the screen-shot from her computer to yours and post it here, using the portable drive. Those are very handy. :)

If the compatibility thing does not work the first time around, also try this: Create a folder on the desktop and name it "Dogz 5 Install" or something similarly obvious. Copy every single file on the CD over to that folder and then go through the steps to run in compatibility mode on the installation file again, to make sure they took. Then try to do the install from that desktop folder. It's not a guaranteed success, but I've seen it work.

I'll be working on a gaming problem of my own today (stupid Fallout 3 stupid driver issues stupid crashing so I can't play it stupid... grrr!), but I'll check back this afternoon for posts from you.

Also, I love your signature. I can relate. :-D

A USB key? No...but I do have a card driver with a 1GB memory chip, would that work? I use it for my digital camera, so it should work to save things like screen shots from the computer on.

And ooh heavens...if it doesn't work from the solution you already posted...my sister can stick to playing Pet Vet and Nancy Drew. :-D

As for my signature...yah. rolleyes What I DO know about computers has come from personal experience...usually not good ones...

So I did what you said and when I tried to install it...nothing happened. Restarted the computer and had my sister try it again. This error message came up once:

    Unhandled Exception

    Error Number 0x80040303

    Description: Setup Will Now Terminate

Every other time she tried the installation screen came up gray...I'm headed out of the house right now, but I'm going to try and play around with it more myself this evening.

Hmmmm... the only times I see that message come up is when there is a driver problem with Windows and/or a conflict between an installed driver and the software that you're trying to install. Usually it's solved by updating or reinstalling the driver, and making sure Windows is fully up to date.

You said that the installation most of the time turns gray, and you also mentioned that your sister's computer is not connected to the internet, so it is not unlikely that it is not up to date in drivers, patches, and Windows updates. Especially look at the graphics or display driver. It can have either name.

Hmmm. You're probably right. Well...I'll just tell my sister to find a different game to play. That computer is a hunk-a-junk IMO. She uses it for simple games, typing, and listening to music. I'm not going to go to the bother of hooking it up to the internet and updating everything. She'll keep busy playing Nancy Drew games on this computer and live. :) She may not believe me at first, but she will.

Thanks so much for all your help. I appreciate it...

Everything is in the end an analysis of cost vs benefit. Is it really worth the time and effort you'd have to spend on fixing this? If it isn't worth it to you, then spend the effort and time on something else.

And you're welcome. It's what the forum is here for. :)

Sorry again about the initial misunderstanding too. :-o

Yeah. Petz5 is definately NOT worth the time and headache.

Thanks for apologizing. It's okay. Normally assumptions over the internet like the ones you made wouldn't bug me too much...but today it was sort of... well, shall we say "the straw that broke the camel's back." :) I apologize for not "acting like an adult".

I'll make sure to stay away from the pirating business too while I'm at it...;) :-D

If nothing else, a legally purchased game is way less of a headache to install and play. And then there is the legal side of it as well, of course. :)

No harm, no foul. Now on with our regularly scheduled activities. Like gaming.
