I am trying to upgrade a Gateway 2000 computer... model G6-300 serial number 0010169779... I have been to Gateway but cannot find the help I need... this system was orginially a 98 system... when given to my daughter the harddrive was missing...but everything else is there.. even the software.. now I put in TWO harddrives to give her more space... got it loaded with Win 2000 pro... now the fun begins... in the device manager there is the yellow flag on video controller, vga compatible...I have tried starting in VGA mode... taking drivers from the restore disk, going to Gateway and installing anything THEY had for video... still no difference... also the USB port...it will recognize the USB port when I plug something into and set it up but says there is an error everytime no matter where I get the driver from... so I cannot use my wireless USB card to go internet and do work on it... I have to use the turtle slow dial up and tie up my phone line... now would it be better if I:
    1. go back and reinstall the orginial 98 then do the 2000 as an upgrade?..will this take care of the problems?

    2. continue to try and figure it out as I am and end up bald...

the web link on Gateway for this : http://support.gateway.com/support/allsysteminfo.asp?sn=0010169779

that is the orginal configuration... the restore disk has all OS on it... from Win 3.1 to winit 4 something... I forget... but any way...there you have it... do I shoot it now or keep trucking and trying to get it to work...confused

The only thing I saw on the Gateway support site (for the provided Mod/Ser No.'s) which might come close is the bios. If you're using onboard video there may be something in the update.

Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, look under Computer, Summary, Display, or under Display, PCI/AGP Video. This will tell you what display adapter/chip you have. Post that information. (Video Adapter and 3D Accelerator.)

You will most likely find your motherboard/chipset information. Post this as well.

Well I download the Everest program and put it on the machine...this is what I came up with
Xenon Mecrosystems Chromatic Mpact2 PIC/AGP video
when I did a search for a driver I could not find any.

    the mother board is :
    Intel Atlanta AL440LX
    MB chip set i44OLX

this does not help me much if I can't get the drivers to load right..it hangs the system up constantly. :cry

okay...installed above file... it did speed up the system... still shut down is not complete...must cut off to get it to restart. that has been the case all along ... the USB problem is solved and it connected to wireless network just fine and is downloading on automatic updates... it already had SP4 on it...so it is doing I guess the security stuff... but anyway...in the device manager it still has the yellow before the video controller , vga compatible.. and the sound is loaded but will not work...I tried a different set of speakers...you get an occassional click or tap sound but no system sounds..like startup...I cannot get it to reinstall video drivers...says it can't find them even though I point it to the right files.. so it is stuck on 16 colors and the lowest resolution.
I guess I just gotta keep at it till things start to straighten up...tried logging onto MG with it but it hung up on the main page of MSN..letting it finish updates then I will reboot and see if anything has changed...:tired

You should grab these files and save them somewhere safe for now: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...ame=Windows*+95&lang=eng&strOSs=15&submit=Go!

Generally, drivers are O/S specific. As well, some machines are designed for a specific O/S. A manufacturer (HP, IBM/Lenovo, Dell, Gateway, etc) will take a generic motherboard equipped with basic video and sound capabilities (onboard chips), program a tailored bios (usually Phoenix), and obtain the (onboard chip) drivers for the currently popular O/S of the time, and sell the system. As a result, some systems just will not run a "newer" O/S (which is partly based upon the current available hardware of the time).

In some cases, these systems can be made to run a newer O/S than they were designed for. The hardware and available drivers for that hardware are the limiting factors. There are "generic" drivers available which will sometimes run the hardware configuration for the new O/S.

    Finally.....

    http://www.video-drivers.com/drivers/114/114867.htm

    From the download site:
Unzip the file anywhere on the hard drive. From the control pannel double click "ADD/REMOVE HARDWARE", now choose "ADD/TROUBLESHOOT DEVICE", When hardware detection is complete choose "ADD NEW DEVICE", "NO I WANT TO CHOOSE FROM THE LIST", "DISPLAY ADAPTERS", "HAVE DISK", now browse the folder you unziped to the hard drive and open the folder MPACT_DRIVER_2K_NT. Now choose "MPACTNT.INF".. Click on okay, let Windows Assign this program. Your computer will request to reboot, SAY YES. When your computer comes back on the resolution will be pure.

Please note this is an expiremental driver that was obtained from the site below. It may or may not work for XP users. I was installing my XP Pro but could not find a suitable driver. Perhaps another day I will try and upload my findings.

If you have problems getting the driver, let me know. I have downloaded it and can transfer it to my webspace for you to download (if need be).
