Error messages using Internet Explorer

I just bought a new computer but, living in Japan, it came with a japanese operating system. I erased this and installed a pretty old copy of Windows XP professional. This is the same copy I was using on my old computer but I've been having problems with Explorer. I can't download a lot of the Windows XP updates because I don't have a legal copy (even though I paid for the Japanese version). To try and cover myself, I have installed Avast anti-virus, Safe XP and Syate Firewall.
The main problem I've been having is getting this message,
"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." with options to either close or debug. This message usually comes up three consecutive times and often when I've just closed a window.
When it comes up when I haven't just closed a window, I can usually just move it to the side and keep on working.
The other problem is, I installed a Torrent spy toolbar and this sometimes comes up as the Explorer logo repeated over and over again.
Any ideas?

 

I would probably start by contacting MS and tell them what is going on. They will probably allow you to activate and register the old copy.

Did you erase or did you do a clean format and install. If not clean, you will have leftover problems.
The truly only changes in XP os are all the security updates.

 

I formatted and installed. First time doing this though so not too sure.
The old copy is a copy, not original disc. I don't think they would let me register it.

 

I'm also having trouble with Yahoo messenger. I can install it but it won't let me open. No error message or anything.
