Error on boot

Lately when I boot up the first time, I get this error, but not all the time. This has happened just since the last updates. I run XP HOme. Here is the error.

 

Have you added any new hardware? newdev.dll is short for 'new device'. Try booting in safe mode and check the device manager for any wierdness. Uninstall any new drivers or updated drivers and see if that helps.

No new devices and device manager looks okay.

 

You were in Safe Mode when you checked the Device Manager? You could have 3 monitors, 2 CD burners, a DVD drive, 2 mice and 4 keyboards installed and you wouldn't know it if you didn't check it while in Safe Mode - weird but true!

 

True- but safe mode would show any question marks or exclamation points if there were problems.

 

Did check it in Safe Mode, and still nothing out of the way. This morning when I booted up, it came up okay, no error. Like I said, it is intermittent.

 

Try running a RAM diagnostic (check the Memory downloads here at MG) and run the diag for your brand of hard drive; all the manufacturer's have 'em, and their free, and usually bootable so you don't have to deal with Windows acting up on you. I'd use a bootable RAM diag too like Microsoft Memory Diagnostic or MemTest86 (I think it's an .iso to burn and create a bootable CD).... run the diags and let us know what happens. If you have your WinXP CD handy, click Start > Run; type cmd, press enter, and type sfc /scannow and insert the XP CD when prompted. That may fix the problem also.
