I was given a windows 98 Gateway laptop that had a new harddrive installed. I reinstalled windows 98 from the cd and every time I restart I get numerous errors telling me "cannot find a device file that my be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or sytem.INI file refers to this device file, but the file no longer exists. The errors are always different and are as follows: nwredir.vxd nwredir.vxd vnetbios.vxcl vnetsup.vxd nwlink.vxd nsct.vxd
I have reformatted a number of pc's and never had any errors like the above list. Please help. What do I do now?

Those are network file errors -- off hand I think most of them are netware legacy stuff.

Try pulling you NIC, see if it can boot then.

Your network card, either remove the phillips head screw and pull it out OR if it is onboard, disable it in the BIOS. If you can not do this, you wil need to take it to a shop.

The windows 98 laptop doesn't have a network card. Now what do I do?

    Try this method,

Error Msg: Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows Application. The windows registry or System.ini file refers to.........Vserver.vxd

    Symptom

The following error message appears during boot: Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows Application. The windows registry or System.ini file refers to this device file but the file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling the application to replace the missing file. Vserver.vxd

    Cause

    Vserver.vxd is missing or corrupt.

    Resolution

NOTE: If you received a Recovery CD with your system rather than an actual Windows 98 CD, please refer to KB document 1248 for steps on how to selectively restore a file. The file to be restored is Vserver.vxd. If you received a Windows 98 CD, then proceed with the steps below.

To correct this problem you need to replace the Vserver.vxd file in the Windows\System folder.

    1. Click on Start, then Run.
    2. Type SFC and click OK.
    3. Select "Extract one file" and type Vserver.vxd.
    4. Click Start
    5. The path to extract from is X:\Win98 (Where X is your CDROM drive letter) and the path to extract to is C:\Windows\System.
    6. Click OK
    7. One the extraction process is complete, close all open windows and restart the system.

If the error still occurs, follow these steps.
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Network.
    3. On the Configuration tab, click File And Print Sharing, and then click the "I want to be able to give others access to my files" and "I want to be able to give other access to my printer(s)" check boxes to clear them.
    4. Click OK, click OK again, and then restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.
    5. Repeat steps 1-4, clicking the "I want to be able to give others access to my files" and "I want to be able to give other access to my printer(s)" check boxes to select them in step 3.
    6. Close all open windows and restart the system.

I did everything you said and the errors are still there. When I went to File and Print Sharing, nothing was checked. I did the entire processes twice and the errors are still appearing. I threw the darn thing in the trash but got it out. I won't let it defeat me. That is if you have another suggestion. Please help. Thanks.

After reformatting and installing Windows did you delete or remove anything?

Do you have a Network Neighborhood icon?

There's no network neighborhood icon and I haven't deleted or removed anything from the pc. The only programs on the pc is what was installed during the reformatting with the windows 98 cd. The errors began when I tried to go online with Earthlink. I called Earthlink and they didn't know what the errors were and suggested another reformat. I reformatted again! and had the same problem. Thank you for helping me.

OK, look at these two links from Earthlink Support and see what you think. It matches the error message you are getting but doesn't make any reference to all the .vxd files you mentioned.

Knowing about the Earthlink thing helps. Let us know.
