Errors when trying to do Harddrive scan

I'm trying to test my harddrive which I think may be deffective but I can't get the test programs to run. Both programs require a floppy to be created which is suppose to run at startup, before Windows opens.
Using Windows XP,


The first one I tried is called Powermax
When I try to run this one, during bootup when the program should open I get an error that says
"Cannot load DOS! Any key to retry"

The second program I tried is this Drive Fitness Test
On this one the error says
"Non-system disk or disk error"

Any ideas of how to fix this?

 

maybe try booting from cd .. try this one Ultimate boot cd @ http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

 

Thanks for the link. I can try, but part of the problem is often my computer crashes in normal mode so I may have trouble burning the cd.

While I work on that, anyone else have any ideas about getting the floppys to work?

 

Also, if I do the CD will I have to change the boot order so CD is first or will it be fine?

 

Well I tried the CD and this time I got an error that said:

1.HD System Type-(OF)
Missing Operation System

Anyone knw why this is happenning? Any ideas on how to get any of these programs to work?
