i've been running Eset Nod32 for two years now and have never gotten infected with a serious virus. it always catches harmful stuff. however i find it is a memory hog; i think. it does a partial scan on boot on downloads database update at same time and can take 10 minutes. i've been advised here i may have a hardware problem .. don't know. what is the experience of others with boot time who use Eset?
thank you for any and all responses.

What are the particulars of your computer, Processor Type and Speed and RAM.

    What OS are you running?

When was the last time the HDD was defraged?

I've installed NOD32 on a lot of machines but have never noticed a particular slowdown on boot.

If you stop the Nod from loading at start up and disconnect your internet then boot up that will tell you if the AV is at fault. Go to start/run type msconfig then untick the Nod in StartUp menu.

Other then occasional clicking sound, HDD's don't usually make any noise prior to failing. You could download a HDD diagnostic program from whoever made the HDD and test it.

Are you running the NOD32 Suite or just the antivirus?

I would do as Toke suggested. With the specs you quoted you shouldn't be seeing a slowdown at boot or otherwise from NOD32.

Other things to look at are services and programs that are resident in memory all the time such as auto-updaters and so on. If you feel you need them, you can usually find where they are loading and put a delay on their startup.

forgive me but due to 2 factors a.)old age 2b.) to used to seeing the following: when xp starts to boot it goes to a screen similar to f8 safe boot then boots. also hp imaging is loading and staying on task bar. so perhaps my hd is messed up some how.?:confused
    Any thoughts??

It's very possible that the HDD is failing. You can download a utility from the HDD manufacturer that will test the true integrity of the drive , usually without loosing any data from the drive but do a backup anyway.

Another test is built in to Windows but does not do the same thing as the manufacturer test. You said your running XP Pro so go to My Computer and right click on the boot drive. (usually Local Disk [C:]). go to "Properties" and left click. Go to the "Tools" Tab then click on "Check Now" in Error Checking box. Tick both boxes under "Check disk options". Then click "Start". A lengthy message will appear telling you something like "it needs exclusive access to specific files on the drive. Click yes if you would like to schedule the scan." follow the prompts and reboot the machine. Windows Chkdsk will run when the machine boots, it can take a very long time depending on the size and condition of the drive.

There is also a utility called Crystal Disk Info that I have found to be worth using. It reads the S.M.A.R.T. data from the HDD and gives a good indication of potential problems. This utility does NOT replace the two tests mention above, do both of them, it just gives you a quick look at the basic condition of the drive.

I don't think it was fake but it may be a false positive. Many of the downloads are available from MG servers but that one seems only available from the authors website which may have been compromised.

If you like, I can link to an older version I have been using for some time.
