Woke to HP splash page saying press the escape key for startup menu. Only escape key doesn't open said menu

None of this f keys are functioning and PC is stuck on this screen. I pulled the CMOS bumpers and took battery out and unplugged it held down power button. Still same screen on restart.
No clue what to do now

    Update:
I reset my mem, and put in a new mobo battery. Crossed my fingers. Same splash page.
I then disconnected my HD and turned it on. Same splash...no message about lack of a hard drive
:( this does not bode well

If you want help, you might consider posting a) what exact model of HP computer this is on and b) what version of Windows you are running.

    From searching through previous posts,
    https://forums.majorgeeks.com/threads/sluggish-pc.319139/
and having to download a report, it appears you are running Windows 10 never say
because it could be 7, 8, 8.1, 10 or even XP!
You own an HP Pavilion h8-1050.

Though from your posting, about function keys not working, it seems like this might be a laptop.

I have no idea what CMOS bumpers are.

    Hello
    Is a desktop.
Sorry for the lack of info about my pc. Since I cant access my desktop I didnt have access to my dxdiag file.
And I dont know my specs by heart.
When I said that the funtion keys werent working, I meant that I wasnt able to enter repair mode. Keyboard powers on but the pc doesnt respond to any keys being pressed.

And about the bumper. A buddy suggest that I try to clear my CMOS in the manner listed here:

Thank you :) I really appreciate you taking the time to find the info about my pc from previous posts. Not many people what have bothered :)

:) my buddy called it a jumper. When he was helping me find it. I was calling it -this lil blue thingamajig?-
I was scared to even touch the thing.

Thanks eldon. I never thought about bumper meaning jumper.

You should at the very least post the version of Windows. You don't need Windows to boot up to know what OS you are running.

Did the Win 10 recently get an update? If so, that might be the cause of the problems. The 1809 update I've been reading has removed files, even going so far as to completely remove the entire profile.

I don't run Windows 10 so I can't help with getting a clean install done.

Updating my situation. In case someone finds this helpful.
So I was pretty sure that my mobo was the issue and was about to haul my out rig to the place where all my old pcs go when they die.
But I decided to try again after plodr said that a recent update was causing issues.
I plugged it up and got the same splash. Escape key was still not taking me to the start menu. I pulled the cmos jumper and touched both pins with a flat head screwdriver. This time all my fans stopped. (That hadn't happened when I tried yesterday)
On reboot I now got a message that I didn't have a hard drive. (Id disconnected it yesterday while testing, hoping to get this very message.)
Upon reconnecting my hard drive and rebooting my system I got the same splash screen, but this time it wasnt hung. And my pc immediately went into Windows Update mode.
After the update I was able to log into my pc again. So far it seems stable and without further issue :)
Thanks for all your patience guys!

I hope it wasn't the 1809 update. There are problems with it and MS has pulled it twice already since 2nd October.
