    Hey,

I'm trying to solve a problem I'm having connecting to the internet through my ethernet port. I have boadband, and have been connected thorugh my USB for over a year now, but I'm going to be setting up a wireless network and want to run it through my Ethernet port. I tried simply unplugging the Motorola Surfboard modem from the USB port and running it into the ethernet port, but I can't get any response as far as the internet. The Network Settings is showing the connection as active, but bringing any applications like Internet Exporer up gives me the old Check Network Settings screen,so I know I'm not getting any thruput. I had a feeling that it wouldn't be that simple, but I can't figure out what settings I need to change in XP to make it work. Is it simply a matter of chaning the TCP/IP propertties settings, or do I have to make some major changes to make the switch from using the USB to using the Ethernet? Someone mentioned to me inpassing that it may be a case of needing to refresh the IP Address, but I'm not sure if that is all I need to do. Any help would be very much appreciated.

did you run the motorola install assistant on the cd after you switched cables?

-turn of the computer, pull power from modem.
    -reset all cables.
    -power to modem.
    -turn on computer.
-it may be working, but run motorola install assistant.

i had a huge headache trying to get mine to work going through a wireless router and i had to do the above steps to get it to work.

    Ace,

I did not run the assistant, I'm often stubborn and try to solve everything just by working it out myself. I'll give that a try as soon as I get back from work. Thank you for the suggestions.

Well, I tried the steps Ace recommended and I still can't get anything. The Network window shows the connection, but the Properties window is grayed out and if I hit Repair I get a message saying "Unable to query TCP/IP settings." I'm really not sure what the problem is.

You provider might authenticate via MAC number.

By moving from USB to Ethernet it might loose the connection since it sees another MAC.

    Call your ISP and ask.

Open Device Manager (Start --> Run --> "devmgmt.msc") and check to make sure that there is no red 'X' or yellow exclamation point on any of the devices in your system. Expand Network Adapters and make sure that your network card is listed. [Your USB cable modem may be listed, too, and if it's no longer connected it might have a yellow explamation point -- that would be expected in that case.]

If that's OK, open up Network and Dial-up Connections (Start --> Settings --> Network and Dial-up Connections). Again, because you had a USB connection, there might be more than one connetion listed. Open one of the listed connections, and click the Properties tab. Make sure that your looking at the right connection by checking that the network card is listed under the "Connect using" label. All you want to do here is ensure that Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Client for Microsoft Networks are both listed. Click TCP/IP, and the click Properties. Make sure both DNS and IP are set to automatic configuration.

Now, shut down your computer, and unplug your cable modem. Plug the modem back in, and start the computer. Check for Internet connectivity.

If there's still no Internet, open up a command prompt (Start --> Run --> "cmd"). Type "ipconfig" and press enter. Look under the Ethernet adapter connection (there may be more than one listed). If the IP address is either 0.0.0.0 or 169.254.xxx.xxx, then type "ipconfig /release" and run that, followed by "ipconfig /renew".
