I have a Dell Dimension 4600 5 year old pc that runs XP.
I'm streaming a live webcam that shoots the birds at my window.
I am allowed 512 mbps but rarely get that so that the stream looks crappy.
Someone mentioned that I should get a new Ethernet card and it would improve my wildly intermittent upload speed . Is this true ?
If so, which card should I get.
Thanks for any help in advance.
Btw if you like birds and have no life like me :) my site is:
    Flaco's Bird Cam on Ustreamtv.com

Your internet provider is really whats hurtting you upstream. 512 is pretty low see that DSL is about 768 and Cable is about 1200-1600. A webcam with a 512 isn't really going to look good no matter what ethernet card you use. Hope this helps.

In other words, you need a new ISP.

Bummer, I get what I think is good download speed 20 mbps but i don't download much.
So even if I upgrade the adapter card I'm not gonna gain?

Don't get me wrong, you have a very good download speed but maybe no upload. what would make a clearer picture would by a higher resolution webam, but a higher res cam cuts also into upload bandwidth. A new ethernet card will not give you any gain. I went to your cam site and the video seemed fine, except for quality. Quality would be the camera's/setting limitation.

Well, the camera is an inexpensive Microsoft VX 6000.
I realize that I probably could get a better picture with a better camera.
Time warner cable my provider isn't too good. maybe I should find another ISP.
Still don't know why it's limited to 512mpbs even if i don't get close to it.
    Thanks for your help.

Are you limited to 512 down or up?

    Surely you mean kbps?

To hear about someone compaining about 512-mega-bits-per-second UPLOAD would be pretty gobsmacking :p

What have to agree Q, I'm only pulling 1.15up on comcast and 18 down.

sapo go to speedtest dot net to get actual numbers without the webcam streaming and post back results.

I have a Dell with a P4 CPU and 1.024 Ram. The download speeds are over 30 MBPS but the UPLOAD sucks at only .18. My cable tech came out and verified the speeds and suggested I get a new eithernet card for this 32 bit 6 year old PC. Does this seem reasonable or could it be a waste of time? I wouldn't know what type of card to buy either?

Upload and download speeds are controlled by your ISP.
What type pf broadband do you have and who is your provider?
