I formatted a 633Mhz Gateway with 192mb ram to xp pro corp, i had to install a thernet card, a belkin, which the pc recognizes and installs, BUT i get this error in device manager, This device cannot start. (code 10), why is this and what do i do? Thanks in advance, appreciate any and all help.

Does the onboard modem being enabled have any bearing as to the NIC card working properly? Never had this problem before.

try disabling it or manually assigning both the onboard modem and the belkin card their own irq in the bios.

I am not familiar with assinging IRQ's , and i didnt see anywhere in the BIOS where i could do that. I am at a loss here, ia n old pc, old bios maybe, but it is rather frustrating. Any help is appreciated, step by step assigning IRQ maybe?

    that's what I meant yes.
however I'm completely out of energy (3am here) so I'm off to bed.

    I'd try disabling the onboard.
then reseating the belkin to a diff pci slot (works sometimes, this assigns the card a diff irq without you having to mess with it)
    then manually reassigning irqs.

    good luck :)

Nobody has an answer for this problem, i cant figure it out. Weird, just dont know what to do. I have tried 3 NIC cards, none will work, they install fine and drivers as well, the message in device manager is, This device cannot start. (Code 10) Beats me.

I'm curious as to whether you followed fleppen's advice about swapping PCI slots with the NIC's. This should select a different IRQ on reboot. It is strange that you have installed three different cards along with the drivers and none of them work. Have you tried right clicking on them in Device Manager and selecting enable? If so, have you checked the bios for any settings that may be in there concerning this? Don't give up, as it is early still, and more members will be online soon :)

Yes i have changed PCI slots, changed cards, someone said i would have to assign a different IRQ, but in the BIOS it does not show anything about IRQ anywhere. Im not sure what to do.
