I recently got a LaCie Ethernet Disk mini. I have it plugged up on a network with 4 XP2 computers. It can be accessed via a web browser and via ftp. I can even use the drive's name, edmini, to attach to it. However it refuses to come up in my network places. It is in the same workgroup as the other computers and according to documentation should show up as another computer in my workgroup. I am working with their tech support through email but I'm also a bit impatient. I'm pretty sure it's the drive, but I wondered if anyone here has had any experience with ethernet drives. I currently have TCP/IP, Netbios, and Netbui protocols installed and the other machines see each other no problems. All the machines are XP Home SP2 variety. I do know that the drive is actually running a variant of embedded linux to facilitate the connection.

what type of network do you have? as in what kind of router are you using?

It is a 100 MB/s network (No Giga Lan). Everything is plugged into a Linksys 8 port router (10/100 standard run of the mill el'cheap-o router). DHCP is enabled, but I currently have assigned the drive a static IP. The IP address has not mattered connection wise as the problem exists both with a static IP or DHCP assigned IP.

does your router see that it's there under the dhcp client table? or is it just that you cant connect from another computer.

I can't map a drive letter to it, I know how to, it isn't being found in network places so that I can map it. I can do everything but that.

Problem fixed. The client for MS Networks has to be allowed to talk over TCP/IP not just Netbui or NetBios. I had made the MS Network client only look on the Netbui or NetBios protocols. The drive needed to talk to the MS Networks client over TCP/IP. That's why I could connect in everyway except though my network places.
