Ethernet Speed Slow But Wifi Speed Good?

Hi, in the past week or so my ethernet connection has renamed itself to an unknown "Ian" and the speed has dropped from my usual 40Mb/s down to less than 10Mb/s. When I switch back to a wifi connection the speed is still around 40Mb/s. I cannot understand what has happened, can anyone throw some light on this for me? Thanks.

Have you reset admin user & password for gateway (router/modem), reboot, login and test?
(im assuming network hardware correctly set)

Unsure how to check/go about this, could you point me in the right direction? Thanks

Your network should not be renaming itself, so either someone else has access, or your actually connecting to another network (unwittingly) as suggested above.
Once you have completed the steps below, this will ensure that your router is secured and no-one is leaching of your network, or has unauthorized access to it.
Then we can go from there!

    Finding your routers IP address:

That link was a note for me, not you.

You failed to answer my question: Is that Ian with an I or lan with an L?

You need a router with QoS service on WiFi, I've been wanting to do this but most of the affordable to mid range routers don't have this feature. You need either 3 routers, one which does the QoS on lan and other 2 which broadcasts the lan connection to wifi. Or buy an expensive router.

Not so......OP suggests wifi speeds are fine and the issue occurs only on ethernet so its most likely either an ethernet adapter issue, or 'data throughput' being decreased by extra bandwidth/modulation being used elsewhere!
