    1. A cable from the modem to the switch.
    2. A cable from the switch to your computer.
    3. A cable from the switch to your kids computer.

the cable from modem to switch,do i put that in the slot labeled uplink?

  11. Squeaner

    Squeaner Specialist

    Yes you would.

Also since you have an uplink port on your switch it's actually called a Router.

thanks,on the gadget it says 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch.after i connect it all do i need to do anything else or just spark it up?

It should work without anything else but let me know if it doesn't work.

You may need to unplug the modem for a minute or two then plug it back in and wait another minute or two.

Look for some kind of reset button on the switch and press and hold it for about 3 to 4 seconds then wait about a minute or two then restart your computer.

What do you mean exactly when you say you can only get 1 computer to work at a time?

Do you mean only one computer recieves that internet at the same time?

Unless you have a Router, you cannot use more then one computer with the modem in your setup. You will need to purchase a Router, and replace the switch with it, in order for both computers to be able to go online at the same time.

Once you get the Router (Linksys are my favorite), turn off the modem and computers, plug router into the modem, then computers into router. When you reboot, uninstall any traces of the Comcast software off of the computers, and go into the Router setup page (could be 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.15.1), and in the MAC Address clone page, you want to "Clone" the MAC of one of the NICS on the computer (usually the first computer that was hooked up to the modem when you got Comcast Highspeed).

Once cloned, set the Router to obtain IP automatically, and everything should be go. Comcast and the Router manufacturers have instructions on their webpages on how to set a router up with said ISPs.

How do i get to the router setup page?
    thanks

Do you have a Router? If you do, the IP would be your "Default Gateway". The IP example as I posted before would be standard. Sometimes it could be different.

If you only have a modem, and not a Router, that is different.

  28. inot66

i have arouter, how do i get to default gateway?

  29. brownizs

    brownizs MajorGeek

From the previous post, you show the IP from the ISP, which is 68.43.88.1. If you have a Router, it would be 'Default Gateway: 192.168.x.x (x.x being the last part of the IP given by the Router for the first address in the addressing scheme).

When you originally posted, you stated you had a Switch, and a Modem, not a router. No where have you stated that you have a router. You still need a Router, which would allow you to share your connection from the ISP. The switch will only work if you are getting Static IPs from Comcast, and you would assign a Static IP to each device on the network (ie more then one computer).

A switch is not a Router, and the modem only works as a Dynamic IP device when not connected to the Coax from the Comcast connection.

I"m told it was a router, because it has a slot marked uplink?
    thanks

  31. brownizs

    brownizs MajorGeek

The Uplink is for a Router, or Modem to hook into. A switch is not a Router. If the device was indeed a Router, your Defualt Gateway would of been something other then the IP given out by Comcast.

ok,i do plug the modem into uplink.
so what good is this switch i have?
    whats its purpose
    ?
    thanks

  33. brownizs

A switch is used to expand from the ports on the Router. Go to the office or local Best Buy, and get a Router.

Well that splains everything. Thanks, on my way.
