Have XP Pro SP3 on a homebuilt AMD based system. Machine has run fine for about 2 years now. I run Acronis TIH 2009 and have it set to perform a backup once a week, it starts around 11:45pm. One morning about 5am I noticed Acronis had not finished, it was only about 1/3 of the way. Normally it just takes a couple of hours. I canceled the scan and noticed comp was sluggish, usually it's lightning fast. Nothing that I would click on would come up, task manager would not come up. I had to shut down by the power button. It took several tries to boot it up, finally got it to boot in safe mode. I uninstalled Acronis on a whim. Ran Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. Both took unusually long to finish. No malware present. Ran a scan with ESET Smart Security and found nothing. Booted into windows with last known config. Comp was sluggish, but seemed to get a little better after running for 15-20 minutes. Checked event viewer and found a lot of warnings that started the same time comp got slow. Error ID 51 "An error was detected\Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation. Also a few, Event ID 26 "The driver has detected that device \Device\Ide\IdePort0 has old or out of date firmware. Reduced performance may result."
I'm running an Asus M4A79 Deluxe board with with the 3204 bios installed 3-25-10.
Any ideas as to what I should try ?

Your harddrive seems to be ok, there are a few problems that could cause this, not enough page file, a failing ide cable[ go's from motherboard to harddrive] or failing ram, heres a read,

Harddrive looked good to me too. I've played with the page file, and it makes no difference.
I have not changed out the sata cable tho, it's worth a try. Don't think it's ram, I have another drive on the same comp with Win7 Ult, and it runs just fine, (I probably should have mentioned that in my first post). I did check out the microsoft article.
I was hoping that someone had run into this before and knew of a fix. My gut is telling me that my XP install is corrupt somehow. Right now, I'm transferring all my settings and files to the Win7 drive and when that's finished I will try a repair on XP. Hoping that does the trick, but, I could be way off here.

Just want to update this in case it may help someone else. The drive did fail, even tho it was checking good. So if you are getting this error make sure you have everything backed up before you even start troubleshooting.
