Everything freezes when installing! - Why?

    I formated my computer the other day. Everything appears to be working properly, except when I try to install programs such as Word, Diskeeper etc... The install gets about 1/2 way through then completely freezes. I've also noticed a lag in the system that was never there before. I haven't changed anything in the system itself, I am still running XP Pro. Can anyone suggest a fix or a reason why this would be happening? Thanks in advance for your assistance!
