EvID4226Patch, no buffer space error and uTorrent

    I run XP Home, SP2. AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.81GHz, 768MB Ram

Some weeks ago I downloaded and applied EvID4226Patch to increase the speed of my uTorrent downloads.
Soon afterward I began getting socket errors - (socket error no buffer space available) and the internet connection died, only to clear with a restart.

I tried to restore the registry settings via the uTorrent options panel but the problem remains.

I've uninstalled uTorrent but still cannot cure the problem.
Anyone any ideas other than attacking it with a defibrillator?
Any help / advice will be very welcome and appreciated.

    Hi Cat_w_9_lives.

As far as I recall the options panel allowed increasing / decreasing the number of ports open.
I read the net.max_halfopen bit but it was beyond me so I left things as they were.

I don't have Norton, or Goback, and XP Restore has no points more than a few days ago. Have got AVG.

    uTorrent is uninstalled.

I run Ccleaner regularly, + SpybotSD registry cleaner.

I already had read the section in http://utorrent.com/faq.php#I_get_a_socket_buffer_space_error_and_the_client_halts
    but without success.

I don't know how to check what ports are open, nor what the default should be, or how to make changes.

Thanks for helping with this, it's appreciated.

    Hi Springbok,

Regretfully I don't use uTorrent, so not sure what u did re ports, u maxed the # of open ports and want to undo?

Do you have an active updated firewall?

Also have you checked your process list? Tried the "fix issues" in CCleaner?
Everything I find, is shortage of resources or apps not closing properly. Do you have a lot of programs running, does this happen when you open a specific program?

You could also try increasing your paging file, might work, but I would wait for a MajorGeek to tell you what safe settings would be, me lil geek.

    Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced >
    Virtual Memory

1152 min and 2304 max is what MS rec. for your memory, but someone will know
more about this than me. I increased mine long ago and no problems.

    M$ notes:
"When you increase the paging file size, you typically do not have to restart your computer.

To have Windows select the best paging file size, click System managed size. The recommended minimum size is equivalent to 1.5 times the RAM on your computer, and 3 times that figure for the maximum size. For example, if you have 256 MB of RAM, the minimum size is 384 MB, and the maximum size is 1152 MB.

    • For best performance, do not set the initial size to less than the minimum recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the RAM on your computer. It is good practice to leave the paging file at its recommended size. However, you may increase its size if you frequently use programs that use much memory. "

    Hi Cat_w_9_lives,
    Thanks for your reply.
I use 'fix issues' in CCleaner every couple of days.
    Windows XP firewall is on.
Number of programs running seems to make no difference.
If I leave the PC with internet connected it will still 'time out' even when I've done no browsing. Seems to give a round 2 to 3 hours of use before I get the no buffer space error - not from my browser (Firefox), but just when checking emails (Mailwasher) or trying to download a video or image file.
From then on clicking a link will do nothing, and the cure is a Restart.

I checked and the Paging File size is set at 2302.

    Ir reads Minimum = 2MB, Recommended = 1150MB, Allocated=2302MB.
    System Managed size is 'On'.

I agree about changing settings, I'll hang on until the 'heavy mob' arrive! :major
    Thanks for that advice.

I've been told that the EvID4226Patch opens up more ports, but stops Windows closing them as usual ready for the next time. Does that make sense?
Anyhow, thanks very much for your help/advice, and for replying so quickly. :)
    Regards,

Personally I never use System Managed Size. Set the amount to a static number for minimum and maximum. That is Initial size (MB) and Maximum size (MB) are the same number. On a PC with 250 MB of RAM it is set to 750 MB.
Saves Windows the trouble of reallocating resources, and since disk space isn't usually at a premium these days I set it to the maximum recommended (3x RAM). I also put the page file on a slave drive, and no page file on C: drive. It saves the head on the Master C: hard drive (with the operating system on it) from having to do the job of reading the page file as well as the operating system files. Only complaint might be about a memory dump as C:, has no page file. Most recommend leaving the page file alone.

    Hi

The Evllord4299patch changes the tcp/ip stack, and thus you can either run the patch again and it should ask you if you want to revert to the backed up tcpip.sys or you will have to manually rebuilt the tcp/ip stack http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/299357

Utorrent is not the issue here. It did not change any Windows registry settings because it is not a registry editor. The settings you changed were for utorrent only. The EvID4226 Patch changed the amount of half-open connections your computer will attempt every second. This is most likely the source of your problem. Run the patcher again and reset the TCIP limit back to the default (10) to see if this fixes the problem. Here is a nice guide to help you set up your PC to optimize BT performance, including the TCIP limit: http://torrentfreak.com/speed-up-your-torrents-ii/

Thanks you guys, I've been looking forward to some suggestions, now I've got enough to keep me busy for a few hours!

I'll run though all you've suggested and come back with results.
    Thanks again. :)
