I use Excel 2002 to compute grades from my Gateway 4200(Win 98) desktop, and save all files to my Novell home directory. However, recently I received a Dell Latitude laptop, with the Office 2002, and use it in the classroom. My problem is that when I open those saved excel files on the laptop, work in it, and save back to the my home directory-- I cannot again open and edit the same files from my desktop or laptop. I can only open them in Openview. When I check the attributes on the excel file, they are listed as "archived". Only happens with excel, and not word or powerpoint. Any ideas??!! Many thanks!!!

Have yopu checked the way your new version of Office actually saves the files?

    Just a thought

MS has no fix for this try to save as your source file that works and be sure to set the attributes if not search synchronizing in the excel help resource.

    FYI why this happened.

When a source file that has no attributes is copied over the network, the Archive attribute is set on the file as soon as the copy process is complete. This behavior occurs only in real mode and only when the network services are started using the NET START BASIC command.

The Archive attribute is applied to copies of files by design; it is set to accommodate backup utilities. The attributes on the source file, however, should not be changed.
