Does anyone know a quick answer on how to make Excel sort by the first letter or number only in a cell? Like I need it to sort A through Z before hitting AA, BB, CC.... Thanks.

Maybe make a new single cell (with a single letter or number in it) and make that your first sort item? Bazza

That would be done with the Left function. For example, if cell A1 contains AA, you could generate A in cell B1 by entering =LEFT(A1,1) in B1. Be sure to include this extra column in all sorts so that the formula cells remain in the same row of the cell to which they refer.

Thanks for the better explanation. I knew what I meant, but maybe no-one else did. :D Bazza
