At work I am running XP pro. I have some macros I created in excel, and have one of them run by an icon in the toolbar.

I last used these before Christmas. I noticed today that the icon was missing, so I checked my macros and they were gone. It turns out the problem was that the copy of personal.xls in the XLStart folder wasn't being run when I started excel. It's definitely there in the XLStart folder though.

I can get the macros back if I open personal.xls myself.

What could have happened to excel, such that personal.xls no longer starts when I open an excel file?

And, if personal.xls doesn't open, would that make the icon I placed in the toolbar disappear????? Wouldn't it just be there, but refer to nothing?

    Thanks

    Try re-adding it.

    Go to Tools =? Add-Ins
Click "Browse" Select the .xls file
After it loads make sure that it's check box is selected.

    Restart Excel.

It says that it's not a valid add in.

But, your suggestion did solve a similar problem that I was going to post today, so thank you.:)
