Excel really easy

Guys,
for like ages I have been trying to find an excel facility that allows a tick/cross drop down box. It has to be there somewhere but I dont know how.

 

Theres a couple of solutions.

If you are using Excel 2003 or earlier you can use windings font.

Somewhere out of the way choose a cell, click Insert --> Symobol from the main menu.

In the symbol dialog, change the font to windings, select the tick (char 252) and click insert.

Close the Symbol Dialog.

Select the next cell down and repeat the procedure to insert a cross (char 251)

Now you have 2 cells (one above the other) containing a tick and a cross. You can use these with data validation to make another cell have a drop down list choosing one of these values.

Select the cell/cell range/column where you want the drop down list (for tick or cross)
to be.

Change the font for the selected cells to Windings

With the cells still highlighted click Data --> Validation in the main menu.

Select List from the options under Allow:
Under Source: Click the button on the end of the input box and highlight the 2 cells you created containing the tick and cross.
Click the button on the end of the inputbox containing the range you just selected and click ok to return to your sheet.

Now in the column/range/cell you chose you will have the option to pick a tick or a cross.

The only problem with this is that the dropdownlist will show the actuall asccii char (2 "u" with accents) so you will have to remember which is which.

For simple boolean values you should just use one or zero, especially if the data will be used elsewhere.

 

I don't have 2007 installed but if you are using excel 2007 you should take a look at this.
