    Excel 2000.
When I try to go to Data/New Database Query, I get the following error:
"Microsoft query could not be started because it isn't installed. You can install Query by running the installation program you used to install Office or Excel. The query option is in the Office Tools category."

This query feature worked last week so I KNOW that it WAS installed. I re-ran the setup and it still won't work. I have also tried to add/remove features and that doesn't work either!
    UGH.

The only references I'm seeing to this error are for Office 2001 for MAC.. can you confirm what OS you are using?

That might help and I always forget that part, XP Pro.

I am not destined to get my work done today! I upgraded to Office XP Pro and now I get the following error when I run my query:
    Syntax error in FROM clause.
    UGH.

Right click on one of the colum headers where the data is to be displayed under, choose EDIT QUERY. CLick on next 3 times until you see the button that says FINISH.. there are two bullets there and one says VIEW DATA OR EDIT QUERY WITH MS QUERY.. tick that bullet and hit finish.. then the query opens up.. at the top is a SQL button.. is say SQL on it. Click on that .. copy out the SQL code and paste it here.

I'm no Excel guru by any means so I can't guarantee that I can get this resolved.

Well, I'm using data from a program that we use but the program is basically built on an access database. So I got the SQL but I went back into my new database query, chose my fields and database, then when I got the error, I went to cancel the query to get the option to continue in MS Query. From there, I chose SQL at the top and copied this for you...same diff I guess:

    SELECT PTWinTrans.fileid, PTWinTrans.tofrom, PTWinTrans.ckdepno, PTWinTrans.amount, PTWinTrans.trustcode, PTWinTrans.trandate
    FROM `S:\SETUP\1\`.``.`\`.``.`\ptwin`.PTWinTrans PTWinTrans
    WHERE (PTWinTrans.tofrom Like '%pete joelson%') AND (PTWinTrans.trandate>20040101)

I read on MSKB that the database would have a period in it's name to cause this error, but I know that it can't or the program wouldn't run. It said it would be my.test.mdb well the db is ptwin.mdb- and don't forget that I said the darn thing worked last week! It also works from another machine with Office XP on it so I know that the db can't have a period in the name or it wouldn't work from that pc.

correct, the path to the database must be complete. Make sure the database exists and try correcting the path to the database.

Well, I was able to modify the SQL lang to get my query to work but how can I get it to pull the correct DB name the next time? It seems there has to be a way to fix what it is doing wrong, the path it looks in etc.

normally , I use a UNC to the server. For ex:

I have a mapped drive> Call it E: that is mapped to a folder on my server.
so my full path would be E:\path\to\database.mdb

With a UNC I use the server name and the FULL path to the db from the root of the server.

    \\SERVERNAME\rootfolder\path\to\database.mdb

that usually solves any drive mapping issues that I run across.

The odd thing is, the DB it needs is directly off of the mapped drive, s://ptwin.mdb, however it is looking somewhere crazy, the part of the path I can read is s://setup/.... just a bunch of dots after that and I don't know why it is looking in the setup folder, it isn't and has never been there.

did you try changing the path in that query to the s://ptwin.mdb directory and saving it?
