HELP!!! I am running Win 8.1 Pro, FireFox. About three weeks ago something changed and I do not know what. My hard drive disk light very frequently indicates there is constant drive activity. For example I can type about two lines in Microsoft Word and the drive light comes on solid for about 15 seconds. And I am stopped until it goes off.

I have stopped the Internet, removed all automatic stuff I can find, stopped all auto backup and defrag, stopped all auto spam checking, etc., etc., etc. Nothing has fixed it. Device manager says it is running OKay.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

While you're hitting this issue, can you give us a screenshot of the Disk tab in Resource Manager and one of the Performance tab from Task Manager, also list the software that's running? This page should help you find the info needed.

You can't do anything until the activity stops?

That is true. It gobbles up all the time.

I am not familiar with the Resource Manager. When the activity is on the keyboard is dead and I am unable to get to the Task Manager. I have tried that many times with no results. When I finally get to it there is no excessive usage in any of the tabs. I will try your suggestion of the performance tab.
    Thank you

This is to Satrow. I have found the resource monitor and am watching the disk tab.
    Thank you

This is a preliminary result but whenever I make a write to disk it seems as if the log files just open up big time. This includes SBAMsvc.exe which is Vipre and also System PID 4, both writing (I assume) to the c:\$MFT (NTFS Master Log File) and c:\$LogFile (NTFS Volume Log File). Does this make any sense?

    Thank you both.

I finally caught one of the instances on the Task Manager performances screen and the accompanying monitor screen using PrtScn. I have attached the results. I need to reformat it as I saved it as a docx. and will change it to a PDF. You will have three PrtScn. The first is the Performance just before the problem, then the Monitor, and then the performance after the problem.

    Thank you

And here is moreinformation. I stopped the Internet and shut down Vipre, my realtime protection. I just watched the monitor and peformance. Nothing happening. After about 4 or 5 minutes I started Vipre but not the Internet. And wham. The interruptions started showing up on the monitor and performance about every minute. And they were outlined in blue on the performance. So it appears something; in Vipre is causing the problem. I will try removing options to see if I can determine the cause.

Again thank you. Finding out about the monitor was a big help.

I think it is solved. Hooray!!. Vipre has two options beyond the normal on-line realtime protection. These apparantly got turned on with the latest update. I don't know how or when but when I turn them off the problemgoes away. They are "Edge Protection" and "Web Filtering". So I am assuming this fixed the problem because I have been watching with them on and the problem was still there, especially with the Web Filtering. With them off it has gone away.

    Thank you for your help
