Excessive *hits* on ZoneAlarm?

I've been using ZoneAlarm Pro for 7 days. In that time, I've had 1832 attempts to access my computer and half of those have been high-rated.

I've run the entire clean-up program prescribed on Major Geeks including HijackThis.

My computer is getting slower, and slower, and slower....

I realize ZoneAlarm is protecting me (obviously quite well), but why am I getting so much traffic?

I use FF browser, Windows XP, Thunderbird mail account, AntiVirGaurd virus protection, SpywareBlaster, Spybot S/D with DSO Exploit fix, Ad-Aware SE, CCleaner...run many of these daily. All MS updates and updates for these programs are installed.

    What's happening????

Also, the tutorial for ZA is not helping me with this, but what are the four icons next to the padlock on the upper right part of their screen? I can't figure out what they mean.

    Thanks!!

With further investigation, I'm starting to suspect Broadjump (CFD.exe) as the culprit here, specifically since most of the hits that give a DNS show other telecommunication companies, gaming sites, and occasionally, porn.

I've deleted Broadjump since apparently, it's no longer necessary once your broadband connection is up and running well. So far, I'm surfing fine, but would like to reboot and see what happens to connectivity.

Any other ideas or info is certainly welcome.

Thanks everyone! I am trying to learn more about computers and the folks on this site have taught me quite a bit!

The 4 icons next to padlock, if you roll your mouse over them and leave it there for a few seconds it will tell you what thay are, one will most likely be Svchost.exe another will be FF, these are the active programs connecting to the internet through your firewall.

The amount of hits will in the majority be harmless as websites you have visited will send out a ping just to see if you are still on their site others can be your ISP seeing if your actually connected to virii like blaster/welchia (icmp) seeing if your vunerable, zone alarm does tend to be over zealous in its reporting of everything!

Thanks Halo. Many of them are ICMP so at least a few of them are explained. The pings make sense after your post too. It's all the other ones that worry me.

97 hits in 8 hours. My idea for getting rid of Broadjump didn't work, but maybe it just takes some time.

What is amazing is that after running all the stuff on the clean-up page, someone suggested Spy Sweeper and it found CWS, Comet Curs., and a Search hijack! Guess all the programs seem to find a little something different than everything else.

well, i've still got mcafee firewall on this comp, and had it on my laptop before the h/d crashed (on it). anyway, i hardly got any hits on either comp, but when i installed kaaza, on both (a while back), i got an enormous amount of hits, so i figured that people were trying to see what i had? the, same happened when i installed a different p2p program. - sos
