exe file association

Somehow, my computer lost the file association for exe files. Whenever I try to use an exe file, it gives me an error that says there is no file association and to create one on folder options. In folder options under file types there is no exe association, so I created one and made it associated with the type application. When I apply it and close the box, the association dissapears again.

Can someone help me with this?
My computer has windows xp sp2.
