From what I can tell, people on the west coast have a different view of Canada and Canadians than people living on the east coast. When ever I’m fortunate enough to get up into British Columbia, It doesn’t feel that much different than going into another NW state except the money’s different and you can’t by alcohol on Sundays except with a meal. Beautiful country and nice people.

Mr. Pewty, by "excersising franchise" you mean casting a vote?

Ha, Ha, I was reading the Wall Street Journal today, and one of the headlines said something like.....

"This is the first Canadian election in a long time that is not boring."

(Or something like that). Was it a close election?

I would love to see Canada and soon. In fact I would like to live further north, Oregon, Washington, Vancouver. Failing that I will consider Montana and Wyoming. As long as it is green. And not too windy. Maybe I will come and live near Mr Pewty.

I've never made it up past Tacoma, but the entire western coastline is gorgeous. Don't move too far inland though or it will be green half the time, and white the other half. Unless you enjoy ice & snow. But then a lot of people do.

Whether the elections go the way you hope or not, it makes a difference to you. You've done what you can do to help, and that's the best any of us can do.

I lived in both Washington State, and Oregon,, with a fair stint in Vancouver. I loved it. If I had the choice, I would move back to Vancouver. Most beautiful.

Yes, casting a vote for a new Canadian government. Unfortunately we have re-elected the Liberals(albeit with a minority). Time for some more TLC.

    Altogether now...

Are the politics in Canada a lot different to the U.S.?

The climate in Vancouver is supposed to be very comparable to that of New Zealand, certainly the area that I was from. I think I would love it up there but the price of real estate is staggering.

Yes. Ours is based on the British Parliamentary system. It has its pitfalls.

Too much party and leader loyalty at the expense of genuine representation of the electorate.

Ehh,, That's just finances. Wanna change our weekend of debauchery to Vancouver? Bikes ready. ;)

  15. MrPewty

    MrPewty MajorGeek

They won't let you in. You have to declare debauchery at the border now, and pay tax on it.

The climate is changing. It's getting hotter, and the Summer is lasting longer. The forest fires are licking at the outskirts.(currently approximately 350 in BC). I have to admit to being not a little concerned. Maybe it's time to head north.

Hey it wasn't my idea. I voted for the debauchery party. My auchery has never been so debbed :)

Just imagine, if GWB promised 50 billion dollars for a national subsidized daycare program.

Adjusted for population, that's one of the things my tax dollars are going for this term.

See, if you didn't jackrabbit around so much, I'd know which thread I'm supposed to be posting in!
Now everyone has gone to bed, I'll have to put off debauchery until we can figure out how to bribe the Canadians (that's if they can get their fires under control and we don't need daycare!)
Mr Pewty, I hope you didn't mean the fires are actually threatening your home? We went through that last year, it seemed as though we were totally surrounded.
NZ has the same kind of thing with hospitalization, etc, has it's good and bad points. Most of us had private insurance too.
    Well goodnight for now :)

The number of eligible voters who got off their behinds was somewhere in the region of 60-65%.

No couch potato I. My wife had the car, so I walked a mile in 30 degree sunshine to vote. Quite pleasant really.

Minority government for the first time since I emigrated. Should be interesting...

LOL. You're doing  over 60-65 % or elligible voters showing up. Here, only half of the elligible people bother to register to vote, only half of the registered voters bother to vote, and a lot of the elections are pretty close to 50/50 in the results, so basically many of the people in office were put there by around 12-13% of the people authorized to have a say in the matter.

And we grumble that our votes don't matter. ;)

I'm not a conservative or bloc, at least the Liberals only have a minority this time. Remember the billion dollar gun registration boondogle which was supposed to pay for itself, our new PM was the finance minister of that fiasco. How the hell did they get elected again.

Fear of the unknown in Central Canada. I'm not afraid of a Conservative government. They would not be as right wing as everybody seems to think.
