Explination of MPEG's For DVD's

Hi everyone:

Can somebody explain a few things to me about MPEG's please.

Why is it when you are given a music file or sports clip that is an MPEG it is so easy to open/play and edit in any editing software but if you want to add an MPEG to a DVD that you wish to record it always comes up:

This MPEG is not compatable for the DVD Project.

Converting it with the software is easy, although an extra step.

What type of MPEG does the DVD not need to first convert and why can't the normal MPEG be read by the software without conversions? What freaks it out; afterall it is a file with audio/video that if they let you convert it anyway, why not make it compatable without the extra step?

Those Mpeg clips are either MPG1 or MPG2 specification files. Video clips that are used from DVD are MPG4 specification files.

There are several different MPEG formats, and all are processed differently. If the files are MPEG2 format, they won't need to be converted because it is the compression standard used for DVD Video. If they are in another video format like MPEG4 (examples include avi, divx, xvid, nero digital, ogm, or matrovska) or Apple Quicktime, or Windows Media Video, they will need to be converted to MPEG2 format to be used in a DVD Video disc.
