well, can i suggest getting firefox?

it may be spyware that is causing it to hang, but firefox is virtually spyware free, and it is much faster then internet explorer, plus if you hit control + t in it, it opens up a new tab and you have tabbed browsing.

As Dark Horizon mentioned Mozilla Firefox is a darn good alternative for those having oblivious problems with IE. Also as he mentioned, by holding down the control key (CTRL) prior to clicking on a link will open that window as a new tab! =)

Anyhow, to find a cure for IE problem, you mentioned that you d/l'ed IE6, you mean you upgraded to IE6 from a previous version ? How did you install it, using Windows update or another 3rd party site or used a CD? What Operating System are you using? You should definitely need to provide much more info so we could analyze better and provide more accurate help.
Were there any errors during the installation? Did you have any programs running in the background? If none of these are applicable, using the guides provided on this site (see Spyware Specific Forum were detailed guides), scan your system for a possible spyware/ trojan infection.

If you are using Windows XP, here are some basic tips you could try (if youalready haven't) to see if it helps:
    Empty out: \Documents and Settings\your user name\Local Settings\Temp
and \Documents and Settings\your user name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files folders.
Note: Local Settings folder is hidden by default if you cant see it then go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View > select the radio button next to 'Show hidden files and folder'.
Also if you had any programs/plug-ins installed for Internet security, pop-ups
designed for the previous version of IE you were using, they could be causing problems with IE6 as well...there are few other possibilities that comes to mind but please try to answer my questions and provide more info on your system and what relevant changes you had down prior to this problem...

or, you could always try the other generic fix if it just happened,

if you are using windows ME, XP, or 2000, go to start --> programs -- > accessories -- > system tools -- > system restore

and set it back to the day before you installed internet explorer 6
