explorer.exe crash

im using windows xp sp2. the problem started last night. explorer.exe would crash with the error "The procedure entry point InternetGetSecurityInfoByURLW could not be located in the dynamic link library WININET.dll." i googled it to find that it was a common problem among internet explorer 7 users. thing is i don't have ie7. i have ie6 which i don't even use. i also read that this might be a malware issue so i apologize if this is in the wrong forum. i had a program called outerinfo which i uninstalled, but it did nothing to help. any help anyone could give me would be great.

I take it you mean iexplore.exe and not explorer.exe? in either case I feel you have malware as a fake wininet.dll is used as a cover at times by trojans.

Yes it was an issue with beta versions of IE7 in general, but you only have IE6 so as you also know could be caused by malware, so with you having Outerinfo malware and it generally comes with other nasty malwares as a tag on, I would suggest you post in the malware area of the forum,

but before you do and this will save you some time, do run the below and attach the requested logs with your New Thread in Malware
